Job Summary:
The Interim Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the Head and Associate Head coach in development, coaching and administration of all aspects of a highly competitive NCAA Division II athletic program.  The Interim Assistant Coach will assist with management of department wide programs including but not limited to academic support, game management, serving as a facilities coordinator, recruitment, fundraising, procurement of equipment, travel, NCAA compliance, supervision of assistant coaches and volunteers.   

Note that because this is in Interim position, this position is non-exempt hourly and temporary for six months and/or until the full-time regular position is filled. 

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year collegiate institution.
  • Coaching experience at intercollegiate level with successful recruiting and competitive record.
  • Demonstrated commitment to rules/policy compliance and a commitment to student-athlete success both academically and athletically and overall student-athlete well-being.
  • Commitment to positive student-athlete experience for the entire team.
  • Demonstrated regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance in your career, with the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Previous NCAA DII experience.
  • Experience working with women’s basketball.
  • 3+ years of successful coaching and recruiting experience.
  • Experience taking teams to post season championships.
  • Experience with program administration at the intercollegiate NCAA level.
Other Qualifications: 
  • Attend to details to effectively act on policies necessary and appropriate to HPU Athletics, including:  Sports Medicine Handbook, HPU athletics policies and procedures manual, HPU compliance manual, and the student-athlete handbook.  Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures and the ability to effectively enact them is expected for continuing employment.  Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action and or termination of employment.
  • Attend to details to effectively act on policies necessary and appropriate for managing NCAA and PacWest Conference related compliance. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary actions and or termination of employment.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position. 
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break and other holidays, if necessary.   
  • This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position.   This includes a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle.  Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU’s Vehicle Driving policy. 
  • Able to work all shifts and extended hours. 
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilize excellent time and stress management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
1. Develop and administer a successful sports program (60%)
  • Recruiting and developing student-athletes who will successfully represent the institution academically and athletically.
  • Scheduling and organizing practice and contests in accordance with applicable Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations.  
  • Attending and coaching all games and practices.
  • Administering sports program budget in line with the guidelines provided by the Athletics Department and the Office of Chief Financial Officer.
  • Coordinating procurement of uniforms and equipment.
  • Making travel arrangements for both on and off-island travel. 
  • Keeping abreast and ensuring compliance with the Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations while maintaining highest ethical standards of conduct.  
  • Supervising assistant coaches and other program personnel.

2. Monitor and foster student-athletes’ well-being and academic success (20%):
  • Monitoring student-athletes’ academic progress in collaboration with the Athletics Academic Advisor.
  • Developing and instituting mandatory or voluntary study programs for student-athletes. 
  • Fostering student-athletes’ well-being through provision of a safe and a non-discriminatory environment.
  • Ensuring positive student-athlete experience for all athletes in the program.

3. Fundraising and Community Service Efforts: (10%)
  • In conjunction with the University Relations Department, effectively organize and administer a robust fundraising schedule in a timely and efficient way.
  • Organize and participate in at least one community service event each year.
  • Organize and engage in at least one community engagement event each year.

4. Support operations of the HPU Athletics Department (5%)
  • Participate in department meetings and events.
  • Assist with other sports event management as needed and assigned.
  • Assist and serve on committees and sub-committees as needed.
  • Actively participate in Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) appointments and follow up communications on a regular basis.

5.  Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments. 
  • Assists with seasonal peaks.
