Working with student athletes, ASA tutors not only have to follow OSU rules and policies but those under NCAA as well. Therefore, tutors are required to uphold a Professional Distance policy. ASA defines professional distance as being friendly with student athletes, but not necessarily being a friend. Our professional distance policy prevents ASA student staff from spending time with student athletes outside of their tutoring or study facilitation sessions. This also includes any non-professional relationships with student athletes; friendships or fraternization and romantic relationships. Examples of non-professional relationships that may breach ASA’s professional distance policy might include: • Being a roommate with an OSU student athlete • A living situation where a student athlete might regularly visit. For example a roommate has a sibling on OSU’s roster • Dating a student athlete • Having a close friendship with a student athlete Given these examples, can you think of any reason that would prevent you from upholding ASA’s professional distance policy if you were offered employment?
