Position Summary

The Senior Athletic Academic Advisor for Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) assists in executing the operations and functions of the Student-Athlete Academic Services program. Reporting to the Director of SAAS, the Senior Athletic Academic Advisor provides direct support to student-athletes on multiple teams. This position provides comprehensive academic guidance to students, overseeing their degree progress, course selection, and overall academic success, while collaborating with faculty and other campus departments to support student needs and promote timely graduation, including colleagues in Athletics and a wide array of other university offices in support of student athlete academic experiences. This position gives voice to student-athletes in support of their academic success and makes recommendations for best supporting student-athlete experiences. The Senior Athletic Academic Advisor maintains comprehensive knowledge of NCAA eligibility requirements in collaboration with colleagues in Athletics and the Registrar’s Office and implements internal processes to coordinate student-athlete support with campus partners, including coaches. This position is responsible for the management, purchasing and procurement of books quarterly for student athletes on an athletic book scholarship. They represent SAAS as liaison to the bookstore. The Senior Athletic Academic Advisor also contributes to assessment of SAAS effectiveness.

Essential Functions

Athletic Team Academic Support

  • Provide direct support to a caseload of athletic teams.
  • Provide academic counseling (including advising and registration support) to undergraduate and graduate student-athletes regarding general academic issues, degree planning, and university academic and NCAA eligibility requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility requirements and communicate these with student-athletes to continue progress toward graduation, while maintaining accurate and complete academic records.
  • Participate in recruiting activities as needed, as well as assisting with orientation, retention, and graduation of student-athletes.
  • Order and receive books every quarter for student athletes who have a book scholarship.
  • Liaise with team coaches regarding the academic progress of student-athletes.
  • Provide referrals for students to campus partners as needed.
  • Interpret and communicate academic policies and procedures to coaches, students, and staff.
  • When necessary, proctor exams for student athletes when traveling to away competitions.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Athlete Academic Services.

Bookstore Liaison and Process Management

  • Manage book purchase and return processes for student-athletes.
  • Approve all book purchases quarterly in conjunction with the athletic department budget and finance office.
  • Coordinate with Director and Assistant Director of SAAS in the quarterly purchase of books for student athletes on a book scholarship.
  • Liaise between SAAS and the bookstore. Meet with bookstore staff and leadership as needed. Troubleshoot and resolve book issues.
  • Recommend process improvements as needed to meet student textbook needs.

  • Interest and commitment to working with a diverse range of individuals within Athletics and the larger campus community.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and adhere to NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively address student concerns and provide clear guidance.
  • High level of initiative, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage a large caseload effectively.
  • Proficiency in student information systems and advising software.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3 years of experience working with students, athletes, or a similar population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising student-athletes at an NCAA Division 1 institution.
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics and NCAA Division I Eligibility rules
  • Master’s degree.
  • Extensive experience in academic advising at the university level, including experience with complex student cases.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 8.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $57,000-$58,500.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
