Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
Position Summary
The Director of NIL Strategy & Player Brand Development is a role dedicated to maximizing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for UNC Football student-athletes. This role will be the primary strategist, advisor, and advocate for players looking to leverage their personal brands, secure fair-market endorsement deals, and navigate the evolving NIL landscape.
Working directly with players, agents, brand representatives, and corporate sponsors, this position ensures that UNC Football athletes have the resources, education, and opportunities to monetize their NIL effectively and legally. Additionally, this role collaborates closely with the Assistant Athletics Director for Football Communications & Branding to ensure that player marketing strategies align with the broader goals of UNC Football and UNC Athletics. As UNC Football moves into a new era under Head Coach Bill Belichick, this position is critical in establishing the program as a leader in NIL execution, equipping players with the knowledge and infrastructure to maximize their earning potential while maintaining compliance with NCAA regulations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with at least 1 year of experience in relevant independent instructional or educational activities; specific minimum experience is at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
10+ years of experience in sports marketing, brand partnerships, player representation, or NIL management. Proven track record of securing and negotiating endorsement deals for athletes. Expertise in fair-market value assessment, contract negotiation, and financial literacy education. Deep knowledge of NCAA NIL regulations and a strong understanding of compliance-related challenges. Established relationships with corporate sponsors, media executives, and sports marketing agencies. Ability to educate, mentor, and advocate for players in all NIL-related matters. Strong strategic vision for NIL growth, ensuring UNC Football remains at the forefront of athlete monetization opportunities. Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with experience working directly with athletes and their representatives.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong organizational skills and effective communication skills essential. Successful experience in a professional intercollegiate or professional environment. Experience recruiting football student-athletes preferred. High degree of integrity and the ability to maintain high ethical standards required. Knowledge of NCAA and ACC rules and regulations essential; ability to adhere to university and departmental rules and regulations necessary.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to move/lift 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Must be able to manage a fast-paced, high volume environment. Attention to detail essential. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions. Travel required.
