General Description of the Position

The Assistant Football Coach assists the Head Football Coach in directing all activities of the program within NCAA, MEAC, and DSU policies, guidelines, and procedures. The Assistant Football Coach is responsible for maintaining high academic standards to support the academic development and graduation of student-athletes while focused on student-athlete welfare; assisting in successfully directing the football program to compete for MEAC championships; assisting in the recruitment of student-athletes and maintaining a culture of personal accountability in student-athlete academic performance and conduct; assisting in the planning and direction of all practices, travel, and game activities; assisting, as delegated by the Head Football Coach, in preparing and managing the administrative functions of the football program; and assisting in community engagement and donor relations by promoting the football program within the priorities of the Department of Athletics and Delaware State University. 

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job.

  1. Successfully recruit, retain, develop, and graduate high-performing DSU football student-athletes
  2. Assist with the preparation, organization, design, and implementation of effective practice plans, off-season programs, scouting reports and recruiting systems;
  3. Effective and timely preparation and management of administrative functions related to the football program;
  4. Effective community engagement, donor, and public relations;
  5. Consistent compliance with NCAA, MEAC, and DSU policies, rules, and regulations

The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  1. Demonstrated knowledge in the operations and administration of a collegiate football program.
  2. Strong knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  3. Excellent communication, organizational, teaching, public relations, interpersonal, customer service and supervisory skills;
  4. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Qualification Standards

  1. Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Masters Degree preferred.
  2. Expertise in the technical, player development, team building, and teaching components of coaching collegiate football
  3. Three years of collegiate coaching and recruiting experience and/or 5 years of collegiate and high school coaching and recruiting experience required.

The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the DSU Fundamentals;
  2. Effective interpersonal relationships and communication with student-athletes, support staff, community, alumni, faculty, staff, and administration;
  3. Sound fiscal management and stewardship of program resources;
  4. Consistent compliance with NCAA, MEAC, and DSU policies, rules, and regulations;
  5. Preparation, organization, design, and implementation of effective practice plans, off-season programs, scouting reports and recruiting systems
