Under the general supervision and guidance of the Director of Academic Services, the Athletics Academic Advisor (
AAA
) will provide a high level of academic support in an industry leading and progressive academic support team. The
AAA
will manage all aspects of academic support for assigned student-athletes/sport programs while monitoring academic progress,
NCAA
eligibility requirements, and progress towards graduation. The
AAA
will be required to exhibit ongoing and open communication with student-athletes, coaches, academic services team, athletics department staff, and university faculty/staff. A thorough understanding of the University of Utah, Big 12 Conference, and
NCAA
rules and regulations is required.

Provide high level progressive academic support services, as a member of an industry leading academic support services team, to all student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff, and campus partners
Facilitate student-athlete academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate academic plans while educating on available majors
Serve as an academic mentor to all new students-athletes (freshmen & transfers) to facilitate a positive transition
Meet weekly with identified student-athletes assisting in the development of daily and weekly academic objectives
Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Burbidge Athletics Academic Center and the management/oversight of a structured study hall program
Work cooperatively and proactively with unit Learning Specialists
Work closely with the Athletics Psychology & Wellness team when required
Provide information and guidance on major exploration, course planning, transfer credit, registration, and graduation requirements
Provide/monitor academic advisement (in conjunction with assigned college/major advisors) to student-athletes while ensuring balanced course schedules accounting for practice times and required team travel
Ensure student-athletes register in a minimum of 12 (suggested 15) degree applicable credits each fall and spring semester while fully utilizing the priority registration process
Ensure assigned senior student-athletes have successfully completed their application to graduate before the university stated deadline
Maintain student-athlete files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during advising visits adhering to
FERPA
rules and regulations
Effectively and regularly communicate with instructors/professors, faculty, and teaching assistants while proactively monitoring the academic performance of assigned student- athletes
Assist in the compilation and dissemination of academic reports (i.e. weekly academic reports, academic updates, end of semester academic reports)
Monitor academic progress specific to the University of Utah, Big 12 Conference, and
NCAA
eligibility while regularly communicating to coaches, sport supervisors, and Director of Academic Services
Complete, accurately and timely, eligibility check sheets and eligibility spreadsheets (updated at the end of each fall, spring, and summer semesters/session) while participating in the ongoing eligibility/certification process of assigned student-athletes
Collect and process all less-than-12 forms for certification and eligibility
Work closely with the Sr. Associate AD for Academic Services to monitor sport specific
APR
projections and final reports for submission to the
NCAA
Assist with recruiting efforts while meeting with prospective student-athletes as requested in order to discuss the goals, vision, and philosophy of the academic services program
Engage in annual professional development opportunities designed to increase knowledge of the academic advising profession while enhancing your ability to serve student-athletes
Work evenings and weekends as required while performing additional duties as assigned

Bachelor’s Degree required in related field. A minimum of two years of experience in post-secondary educational institutions. Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of
NCAA
eligibility/certification rules and regulations. Strong oral and written communication skills will be necessary while being available to work evenings and weekends, as assigned.

Master’s Degree in counseling/advisement strongly preferred, student personnel, education or related field. A minimum of two years’ experience working in an Athletics Department Academic Services Unit as a counselor, advisor, or learning specialist. Demonstrated experience working with academically under-prepared/high-risk populations. Working knowledge of Big 12 and
NCAA
rules and regulations with proficiency specific to Bylaw 14. Experience working with a diverse population and international student-athletes.
