Responsibilities:

LEARNING SPECIALIST

• This position coordinates aspects of the learning assistance program and serve as the designated learning specialist for football, an assigned group of student-athletes and for those diagnosed with learning disabilities.

• This individual is responsible for providing academic support and services for the assigned group of individuals. These include but are not limited to intensive, essential learning strategies for at-risk student-athletes, skill development in critical academic areas and assessment of student’s skills and abilities. This is provided by being proactive, intrusive and by using research and knowledge gained in the field to crate a sustained and individualized support system to enhance student success and help develop independent learners.

• This position is also responsible for academic needs assessment for student-athletes with a learning disability or learning deficiencies. In addition, providing referrals for further testing by a licensed Psychologist.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

• The advisor provides academic advising to student-athletes on assigned teams to include scheduling of classes, major selection and required exams for enrollment/graduation to ensure students are making satisfactory progress towards their degree.

• The advisor monitors academic progress for continuing eligibility and graduation, coordinate travel letter distribution, produce academic grade reports, monitor study hall hours, and oversee mentoring of at-risk student-athletes.

• The advisor assists in the recruitment process, keep current with changes in NCAA and university policies, and maintains daily communication with students and coaches on assigned teams in regard to academic development.

MENTORING

• The advisor provides academic mentoring to student-athletes in football.

• This includes monitoring the weekly task list for assigned students, tracking on assignment completion, coordinating accommodations as applicable, assist the advisors with faculty communication and be a liaison with Student Accessibility Services to ensure students have the necessary resources they may qualify for.

• In addition, the advisor uses learning strategies and skill development through the context of the student's coursework to enhance skill building.

• The advisor communicates regularly with the football academic staff on the progress of students under their supervision.

ASSESSMENT

• The advisor assists in the coordination of ASSA's classification system for new and returning students; planning and applying necessary resources to students based on their academic level and skill.

• Data analysis and research are necessary components of this position in conjunction with the other ASSA learning specialists.

• Determining placement in the summer bridge program is also required as well as determining which students will need to go on for further testing after summer bridge has been completed.

INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PLANS

• The advisor creates and develops individual learning plans for assigned student-athletes as well as coordinate the process for all learning specialists.

• In addition, creates a template for coaches and support staff as well as internal staff. Update plans at the end of every term.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

• The advisor collaborates with the campus Psychology Department and other ASSA learning specialists to create a standard curriculum for students with disabilities. This curriculum would be adaptable for all students but individualized for each student. This would be primary guide for meetings with students and to help develop and enhance skills during meeting with students.

• In addition, the advisor creates an educational curriculum for ASSA staff; presents in staff meetings and during trainings to graduate assistants and interns; presents strategies to staff to enhance their working knowledge of various learning disabilities, assistive technology, and ways to develop academic skills.

MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES

• Responsible for the completion of monthly, semester and annual reports regarding the student-athlete population.

• Prepare data collection, evaluation, assessments, and analysis for continuous research regarding the effectiveness of the assessment process.

• Understand that rules compliances is a critical element of this position and adhere to NCAA, Conference, UCF and UCFAA rules, regulations and policies.

Minimum Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years.

Preferred Qualifications :

• Prefer selected candidate to possess experience working with student-athletes in an academic support environment to include mentoring and advising.

• Familiarity with coordinating a study hall or a computer lab is preferred.

• Familiarity with NCAA progress rules, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work with a diverse population and with a dynamic staff in a fast-paced environment.

• Familiarity working with international student-athletes.
