General Summary
Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive program of academic coaching, monitoring, tutoring, and academic support which leads to an improved retention and graduation rate for student-athletes. Provide academic counseling, tutoring and mentoring to student-athletes in compliance with NCAA regulations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Mentor assigned program participants and provide instructional intervention as appropriate on academic, career and college planning issues as assigned. This may include, but not be limited to, evaluating learning needs and coordinating the use of supplemental EMU academic resources; coordinating tutoring; and developing individualized academic support plans.
Carry out the objectives of a comprehensive learning program for at-risk student-athletes, including contact with professors, mentoring and tutorial needs.
Evaluate and report on the academic progress of all assigned at-risk student-athletes.
Assist in the academic coaching of assigned student-athletes.
Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families as requested.
Adhere to any and all NCAA, Mid-American Conference and Eastern Michigan University policies, rules, regulations, and operational procedures.
Perform related departmental duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least two years of experience in guidance, counseling, and motivational techniques is required.
A Bachelor’s Degree in business, education, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution is preferred.
Previous experience working with students experiencing academic difficulties in a higher educational setting is required.
Previous experience with professional tutoring or experience with a special education population or possession of a teaching certificate is preferred. Must have the ability to analyze/interpret the results of educational testing.
Knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility requirements is desirable.
At least one year of coaching, athletic administration or collegiate athletic participation is preferred.
Ability to work with student-athletes in a multicultural environment is necessary.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are necessary in order to effectively interact with student-athletes, coaches, family members and other representatives.
Ability to use a personal computer is necessary.
