The Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance leads the efforts to ensure the Athletic Department maintains NCAA, MIAA, and MSSU compliance. The Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance monitors, directs, reports and ensures compliance in the intercollegiate athletics program in accordance with NCAA, MIAA, and institutional rules either personally or through subordinate supervisors. This is completed through submission of NCAA/MIAA/MSSU reports, rules education, effective department and institutional communication and accurate and detailed policy and procedures for all MSSU’s 15 NCAA Division II sports and spirit squad.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
Responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of all policies and procedures relative to a comprehensive compliance program which includes, but is not limited to: recruiting; eligibility; financial aid; playing and practice seasons; amateurism; extra benefits, name/image/likeness, etc.
Develop a comprehensive compliance education program to ensure that all coaches, staff, campus personnel, donors, and other necessary individuals have appropriate knowledge of applicable NCAA/MIAA rules and regulations.
Interpret NCAA and MIAA rules and regulations for MSSU staff, coaches, student-athletes, boosters and community members.
Responsible for investigating and reporting any violations of NCAA or MIAA legislation to NCAA staff, the MIAA office, and appropriate MSSU administration (e.g. President, FAR, AD).
Responsible for submission of all Compliance related NCAA, MIAA and MSSU reports; for example: Sport Sponsorship & Demographic Report, Eligibility Checklists, Academic Performance Census, Academic Success Rate, Federal Graduation Rate, EADA Report, and NCAA Financial Report.
Responsible for creating, researching and submitting all student-athlete waivers such as Student-Athlete Reinstatement, Progress Toward Degree, Initial Eligibility, and Legislative Relief.
Responsible for the coordination and oversight of the Compliance Committee.
Assists Financial Aid office with scholarship budgeting, awarding of institutional and endowed scholarships, and monitoring equivalencies while serving as the athletic department liaison to the office.
Approve, coordinate and monitor official and unofficial visits and other associated recruiting activity.
Maintains Athletic Department compliance software and NCAA Compliance Assistant database, including team rosters and eligibility checklists for all sports.
Assist with updating relevant portions of department policies and procedures manual, as well as the student-athlete handbook.
Serves as the primary point of contact for student conduct issues and oversees student-athlete code of conduct processes.
Serves as game day administrator for assigned home events.
Will serve as Sport Supervisor for athletic teams if deemed necessary and appropriate by the Director of Athletics.
Coordinate admission and certification of transfer student-athletes.
Review and input playing and practice seasons.
Coordinate the completion of required and relevant NCAA/MIAA forms.
Monitor countable athletic related activities logs.
Work actively with the NCAA Eligibility Center for issues related to initial eligibility.
Assists where assigned in coordination, planning and execution of athletic department’s single largest fund-raiser, SouthernFest (Green & Gold Gala and Rod Smith Golf Tournament).
Performs other related duties as required.
Education, Experience, and Licenses
Bachelor’s degree is required. Masters or Law degree is preferred.
Strong written and oral communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
1-3 years of experience working in an athletic department compliance operation or other relevant office.
Experience working with NCAA compliance-related applications such as Compliance Assistant, Eligibility Center, Transfer Portal, etc. preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work with a large and diverse population.
