GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Responsible for assisting the Director of Sports Medicine in the administration and supervision of the athletic training facility and the sports medicine program.  Primary responsibilities include providing the services for the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for student-athletes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Utilize the appropriate application of emergency procedures in the evaluation and treatment of injuries; provide first aid; documentation of care; recommend referrals as needed; and effective communication with coaches and physicians in the care and treatment of student-athletes.
• Provide coverage for pre-practice, practice, post-practice and game-day coverage as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine.
• Assist with pre-participation screening and assessment of student-athletes. 
• Assist with the supervision of the sports medicine department, including in the development of policies and procedures that support the vision and mission of the department.
• Assist with the hiring of sports medicine staff, including other full-time trainers, graduate assistants, and student staff.
• Assist with the supervision of the physicians’ on-sight clinics and coordinate physicians’ visits.
• Supervise the daily prevention and rehabilitation program for student-athletes and consult with team physicians to ensure that proper evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation takes place.
• Provide primary sports coverage as well as assist with the assigning of sports medicine coverage for all sports, including the coverage of team practices and home/away contests as required.
• Maintain detailed medical record keeping for all athletic injuries and illnesses. These should include, but not be limited to, injury reports, treatment records and insurance forms in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
• Assist with the processing of insurance claims for athletic injuries for student-athletes. Review and approve medical bills from physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers to determine accuracy and compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.
• Assist in coordinating and conducting pre-participation procedures and paperwork with University Health Services, Associate Athletics Director for NCAA Compliance, and coaches.
• Assist with any University and/or NCAA-sanctioned drug testing. This includes, but is not limited to, facility scheduling and setup, student-athlete notification, and communication with the Athletics Department’s current drug testing agency.
• Oversee maintenance of the sports medicine facility. This includes, but not limited to, regular safety and calibrating of all modalities, daily sterilization of surfaces and equipment, and laundering and reconditioning of reusable supplies.
• Assist in the education of all members of the coaching staff and supervising administrative staff on details of the Emergency Action plan and their role in executing the plan.
• Work with the strength and conditioning coach when special requirements are necessary for a student-athlete in the progressive rehabilitation of any athletic injury.
• Participate in required continuing education to keep abreast of the latest techniques in the sports medicine field and to keep current with all required state and federal standards.
• Other duties assigned by Director of Sports Medicine, Director of Athletics & Recreation, or the supervising athletics administration professional.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Undergraduate or Master’s degree from CAATE accredited athletic training program required
• Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Certification
• Connecticut State Athletic Training Licensure
• Professional CPR/AED and First Aid Certified
• Prior experience as athletic trainer in collegiate environment preferred
• Prior knowledge and understanding of medical insurance and billing preferred
• Previous supervisory experience preferred
• Strong organizational and communication skills
