Description of Responsibilities:
CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Under the general supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer (HAT), the Assistant Athletic Trainer (AAT) plays a key role in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (IA) and the broader campus community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics at SUNY Oswego seeks, through the administration of 24 intercollegiate varsity sports, to advance the College's overall mission by preparing student-athletes to be leaders who live ethical and meaningful lives and build a better world as successful SUNY Oswego graduates.
The AAT at SUNY Oswego is responsible for aiding in the development and management of a successful sports medicine department. Consistent with SUNY Oswego's, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics' mission and strategic priorities, the AAT will be responsible for care, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries of student-athletes, and ensure compliance with SUNYAC or affiliated conference, NCAA, and institutional policies. The AAT will collaborate with campus partners to ensure student-athlete well-being and success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the overall leadership of the NCAA Division III sports medicine program for all student-athletes.
- Work within the mission of SUNY Oswego, Division of Student Affairs, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to provide a competitive, unique, and memorable collegiate athletic experience for student-athletes.
- Support SUNY Oswego, Student Affairs, and IA's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Collaborate with team physicians and other members of the medical "team" (e.g., physical therapist, chiropractor, and other health care providers).
- Communicate and work in partnership with applicable coaching staff.
- As needed, update and communicate to athletic staff return to play and concussion management protocols as per NCAA and NATA recommendations in review with the HAT and team physician.
- Evaluate injuries and physical ailments; recommend, implement, and oversee treatment, including preparing student-athletes for successful return to participation after injury.
- Maintain medical records management system utilizing the ATS software system.
- Oversee practices and competitions, including pre- and post-practice care and treatment; treatment and rehabilitation of injuries; and travel with team(s) as necessary.
- Monitor return to play progression from injury/illness and modify progression based on individualized response.
- Cooperatively devise rehabilitation programs with the coach, strength coach, and student athlete.
- Maintain injury and treatment logs for all student athletes.
- Assist the HAT in compiling required annual NCAA reporting data.
- Maintain a file of insurance coverage and medical history for every student athlete.
- Resolve conflicts regarding urgency, timeline, and priorities for treatment and care.
- Maintain good relationships with Mary Walker Health Center staff, local hospital and medical personnel, the team physician, and other department and college personnel.
- In collaboration with the HAT and compliance office, submit supporting documentation for medical hardship waivers.
- Establish and ensure communication and enforcement of SUNY Oswego and IA regarding student conduct and behavior.
- Assist with department education programs, including but not limited to concussion management, drug and alcohol, and nutrition.
- Ensure that offices and training rooms are well-organized and compliant with all accepted health standards.
- Responsible for maintaining inventory, processing purchase requests, and organizing storage spaces for all training supplies and equipment.
- Communicate with the HAT and AVPIA any pressing needs or concerns regarding student-athlete well-being or of any current trends.
- Attend all Athletic Training and all department meetings.
- Fully disclose the acceptance of any funds and/or gifts and document all these expenditures in support of the program. Accurately record the amounts and purpose of donations and fundraising activities. Monitor fundraising activities for team purposes after gaining the approval of the AVPIA.
- Perform public relations duties and activities with faculty, students, parents, contributors, alumni, and institution administrators. Promote sports medicine at the local, state, and national levels.
- Supervise graduate assistants, volunteers, and student workers.
- Assist in oversight of athletic facilities. Submit work orders to the Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Internal Operations.
- Possess current NATA certification and New York state registration. Possess current certification in an appropriate level of First Aid and CPR, e.g., "First Aid For Coaches", "Responding to Emergencies", "Adult CPR" or equivalents.
- Complete secondary duties as assigned by the AVPIA. Maintain necessary licenses and certifications, if required to perform such duties.
- In consultation with the AVPIA, serve on institutional committees.
- Contribute to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties as assigned by the AVPIA or other campus leaders.
RESPONSIBILITY TO COOPERATE:
Staff members must possess a commitment and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of State University of New York at Oswego, SUNYAC or affiliated conference, and the NCAA. Staff members must cooperate with and furnish the NCAA, SUNYAC, or affiliated conference, and/or the institution with truthful and complete information concerning involvement in or knowledge of rules violations. Any person who is found in violation of NCAA regulations shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective actions a set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repeated violations.
