About the Position

Working independently and with support of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer develops, administers, and coordinates the medical care of intercollegiate athletes. This position assists with the daily operation of the athletic training facility and equipment, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate sports' practices and contests. The incumbent will perform injury evaluations, provide treatments for injuries, proactive injury prevention, and oversee rehabilitation and conditioning programs. This position works closely with the Head Athletic Trainer in creating and managing schedules and assignments. Additionally, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will share oversight of programming and contribute to the creation and oversight of policies and procedures for Sports Medicine. In the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer, the incumbent will oversee the organization and operation of the sports medicine program. This position is expected to maintain a professional work environment with student-athletes, staff, and the campus community. The ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays and be available to travel with teams is required for this position as is, maintaining all necessary athletic training certifications.

Responsibilities

Athletic Training Duties:

• Daily operation of athletic training facilities and equipment, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate sports' practices and games.
• Perform injury evaluations, provide treatments for injuries, and proactive injury prevention.
• Oversee rehabilitation and conditioning programs independently and in consultation with the Head Athletic Trainer.
• Communicate with coaches regarding the status of injured athletes.
• Serve as first responder for assigned sport supervision and home events.

Administrative Duties:

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with the development, administration, and coordination of medical care of intercollegiate athlete medical care including the scheduling and assigning of student athletes for outside referrals, treatment, and rehabilitation/therapy.
• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with sport assignment and coverage schedules.
• Assist with direction, supervision and training of student trainers and interns.
• Document injuries, complete injury reports, maintain medical records/files.
• Assist with collection, organization, and maintenance of confidential medical and insurance records and insurance billing.
• Assist in the coordination of other athletic trainers.
• Assist in the coordination of pre-participation physicals, drug prevention and drug testing requirements.
• Assist in developing and monitoring the athletic training program budget.
• Organization and operation of the sports medicine program in the absence of the Head Athletic Trainer.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

• Equivalent to (2) two years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

Education:

• Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
• Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

Knowledge:

• General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including: conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
• Full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage.
• Effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
• Rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
• Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.

Abilities:

• Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity.
• Develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries.
• Use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries.
• Determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
• Recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
• Use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions.
• Work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Licenses/Certifications:

• Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.
• Current CPR, First Aid with AED certification.
• A valid California driver’s license.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and travel as needed. 
• Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping and bracing.
• Ability to determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
• Experience with the effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
• Working knowledge of the rules regulations and guidelines established by the NCAA, CCAA, and Cal State East Bay, pertaining to student athletes.
• Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling Blood Borne Pathogens.
• Ability to maintain medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance standards.
• Ability to professionally and effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity.
• Develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs to manage and treat injuries.
• Recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
• Use a computer to accurately perform medical, insurance and other record keeping functions.
• Train others on new skills and procedures.
• Communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Special Conditions

This position has been identified to have significant responsibility for student and campus activities and will be required to function as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act. In accordance with CSU  Executive Order 1107, Implementation of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus  Crime Statistics Act, the incumbent will be responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act crimes to the University Police Department and/or the University Clery Director. 

• Responsibilities of the CSA include:
  • Report all alleged Clery Act Crimes in a timely manner.
  • Report any alleged Clery Act Crimes that are reported to the incumbent using the online CSA Reporting Form.
  • Complete annual training requirement.
