The academic enterprise of the university is organized into our College of Art, Culture, and Scientific Inquiry; College of Education; Richards College of Business; University College; School of Communication, Film, and Media; Tanner Health System School of Nursing; Honors College; Graduate School; UWG Newnan; and our UWG Douglasville Center.
The University of West Georgia is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Athletics Director for Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Excellence. The candidate must support the mission of the University of West Georgia, the UWG Athletic Department, the Atlantic Sun Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletics Association. The University of West Georgia is a Division I member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The candidate must be energetic, professional, and committed to improving the University of West Georgia student-athlete academic performance standards. This position serves as a liaison between the athletic department and other university offices in an effort to enhance the experience for our studentathletes prior to arriving on campus, while on campus, and after graduation. This position works directly with and reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success.
Review academic records of student-athletes to determine the need for academic support services and create educational plans for student athletes requiring academic support. Review and evaluate student athletes' academic progress, timely declaration of a major, and progress toward graduation as they relate to maintaining NCAA eligibility. Liaise with other departments in these matters as needed. Work closely with the Associate Director for Compliance with the ongoing and initial NCAA eligibility certification process.
Coordinate and implement study hall plans for individual teams and track/communicate with coaching staff. Coordinate with Athletics Department personnel to arrange appropriate tutorial services through the Center for Academic Success. Liaise with other departments in these matters as needed. Coordinate and implement priority class registration for all student-athletes. Communication with coaching staff related to registration process/updates/student status. Advise student-athletes of academic requirements and consult with professional academic advisors regarding appropriate class schedules for student athletes.
New student-athlete orientation and class registration. Liaise with other departments in these matters as needed. Data management (organize, maintain, and share with appropriate personnel academic data such as grades, class standing, eligibility needs, study hall reports, class audits, etc). Banner roster management (update Banner roster from Google Sheets completed by coaching staff). Progress report/at-risk notification intervention strategies. Manage CourseDen audits process and communication of results to the coaching staff. Participation/Travel/injury notifications. Offer basic NCAA academic training to campus partners (advising staff). Attending (virtual or in person) ongoing professional development sessions through the NCAA, professional organizations (N4A, WeCoach, etc.), and campus entities (ex. university advising monthly meeting).
Supervise the Athletics Academic Coordinator team and Academic Support graduate assistants.
Bachelors Degree
Minimum of four years experience in teaching, counseling, academic advisement, or academic record assessment. Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
Masters Degree
Experience with Student Information Systems such as Banner SIS is preferred. At least five years of working in an Athletic Department's Academic and Student Services.
The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience.
Knowledge of NCAA, conference and institutional bylaws, policies and procedures. Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to relate well with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. Must have the ability to use a high level of critical thinking skills and have the ability to accurately advise students in many aspects of their college experience. Must have the ability to create and analyze data pertinent to the success of the student-athlete. Candidate should possess competent computer aptitude and skills to perform their daily tasks using a typical office software package such as Microsoft Office.
