Job Summary

We are committed to the well-being, education and equality of every person, and are committed to taking action to drive societal and systematic change. This position is responsible for the marketing and promotional efforts of the University of Portland’s Athletics Department. Specific duties include creation and execution of marketing plans, creating and coordinating digital communication, and oversight of in-game marketing.

Core Duties

Lead the development and execution of marketing and promotion strategies for the University of Portland Athletics division incorporating appropriate channels to meet departmental and/or organizational objectives.  Develop and execute marketing and sales plans for Portland Athletics with emphasis on men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s soccer, baseball, and volleyball; inclusive of on-campus, community, sponsors, season & group tickets holders, alumni, and donors. Oversight of in-game management including video board, music, promotions, script, sponsor activation, and marketing/fan information booth for men’s & women’s soccer, men’s & women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball. Execute and maximize opportunities for game day events that build attendance impact for soccer and basketball such as Bite on the Bluff, Brewfest, Education Day, etc.. Oversee game-day sponsor fulfillment including print, game-day promotion, on-court promotions, game-day hospitality, game-day messaging of sponsorships and promotions. Design and develop digital ad buy for University of Portland Athletics. Design and drive e-marketing and communications to providing effective and brand aligned messaging. Partner with several other athletics department and non-athletics department units to effectively market University of Portland Athletics and communicate with key stakeholders Oversee market research and analysis; apply results to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing. Design marketing materials including but not limited to schedule cards, posters, season ticket cards, PACmail, enews, digital marketing, social media, and marketing flyers. Collaborate with digital media, creative services, ticketing and development to develop and execute a cohesive strategy for assigned programs. Be the on-site representative of the spirit groups at major events (WCC Championships, NCAA Championships). Develop, recruit and manage “student fan” group and Pilot Kids Club group; manage budgets for Purple Pride and Kids Club. Assist with coordination of programs and event logistics as needed. Recruit, hire and supervise a team of student employees, including a part-time Graduate Assistant. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment. Support in the transport of Athletics staff and/or student employees to and from locations as needed to meet the demands of Athletics travel and events, using rental vehicles and University owned vehicles. Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or designee.Please note that the above list of duties is not comprehensive but generally demonstrates the types of matters under this position’s purview and responsibility.

Education & Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience. Preferred: Prior experience in sports or athletics related marketing within an institution of higher education. Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Certifications & Licenses

Valid state driver’s license and ability to pass driving background check.

Strong computer skills and proficiency with office software, email, marketing and social media, and data analysis related applications; ability to quickly learn and use new technologies and applications in depth at level of proficiency appropriate for the position’s duties. Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines. Strong orientation towards taking initiative and ownership of projects and assignments and being proactive with projects, assignments, and process improvements. Strong organizational and time management skills; excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Strong critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and judgment skills. Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems. All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties.

Physical Requirements

Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork. Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary. Frequently: ability to work early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays as necessary (in addition to regular work during University’s business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Frequently: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus. As needed: ability to travel to events by car or air. Occasionally: Drive student athletes and/or other University personnel to practice, games, or other functions.

Working Conditions

Hours of employment: will require working flexible and/or longer hours, including early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays when necessitated by projects. Work-related stress: there may be stress from work-related situations such as those involving challenging, important, urgent, time-sensitive, or multiple matters.
