Job Summary

The Assistant Baseball Coach will recruit, coach, and mentor responsible and academically driven student-athletes for the program. The assistant coach will assist the head coach in all facets of the program, including conducting daily practices during the team and individual segments. 

The position works in all types of weather conditions from the cold to extreme heat, as well as in a fluid environment. Will drive 12-passenger vans on occasion.  Office work environment will also be necessary. Evening and weekend hours will be necessary for competitions and University events or fundraising.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

• Responsible for the successful coaching of the team, including maximizing the team’s potential/abilities.

• Execute a successful recruitment and retention plan.

• Recruit student athletes to support the mission of the University.

• Aid in scheduling, planning, and supervising practices and competitions.

• Travel with team.

• Collaborate in developing and maintaining the operating budget.

• Assist with fundraising and team social media.

• Help administer all aspects of the program, ensuring compliance with departmental, institutional, Lone Star Conference, and NCAA II rules and regulations.

• Participate in alumni and booster engagement, including promotion of the program on social media platforms.

• Submit all receipts and budget reports on time as directed by the Director of Athletics.

• Ensure physical, emotional, social welfare and satisfactory academic performance of student-athletes.

• Establish and ensure a safe environment for student-athletes.

• Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all athletics staff members and student-athletes.

• Help develop a competitive program within the Lone Star Conference with the goal of postseason participation.

• Promote the team and Patriot Athletic programs within the University community, Tyler, and East Texas.

• Aid with organizing camps. 

• Assist with athletic facility maintenance as needed.

DECISION MAKING REQUIREMENT:

• Position is responsible for making decisions and performing tasks that are within the scope of their experience and knowledge, permitted according to policies and procedures of the institution, with the NCAA DII rules.

• The position will also work under Head Coach and use independent judgment in completing numerous tasks.

COMMUNICATION:

• Regularly interacts with the head coach, student athletes, alumni, the press, and others in the campus community. They will need excellent verbal and written communications skills. 

• Navigate and resolve conflicts, provide constructive feedback, and adapt communication styles to different audiences.

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY:

• Position aids in the planning, development, recruitment, and retention of the athletic program that affects student-athletes, alumni, and boosters.

Required Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree.

• One (1) or more years’ experience of successful high-level baseball coaching or baseball operations experience.

• Collegiate baseball playing experience

• May accept a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

• NCAA Division I or II playing experience.

• Master’s degree

Required Certifications/Licenses

• CPR certified or will receive certification within two (2) months of hire. (Must maintain certification in first aid/CPR/AED throughout the entire appointment.)

• Texas Driver’s License or will receive within two (2) months of hire.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
