Job Description

The Assistant Coach serves as a shared assistant coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams, working primarily with the distance athletes during the track seasons. This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position reporting to the Head Cross Country Coaches. The Assistant Coach demonstrates commitment to the Washington & Lee University philosophy by emphasizing academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship in and out of competition.

Essential Functions:

  • Coaches and demonstrates techniques to team members individually and in groups. Manages designated skill development areas or groups of positions. Develops and recommends strategy and teaches theoretical skills.

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises student athlete practice sessions for men’s and women’s distance runners during cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track and field seasons.

  • Teaches one to two Physical Education courses annually as required for student graduation criteria. May stand in as needed when requested by Head Coach or Director of Physical Education.

  • Recruits quality prospective student-athletes and ensures timely submission of their academic records for admissions.

  • Serves as a meet coordinator for the Washington & Lee University Track & Field Carnival and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track & Field Championships.

  • Communicates effectively with head coaches, administration, and peers about program goals, status, and needs.

  • Complies with all University, ODAC Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Supports planning team travel logistics, which could include lodging, transportation, and meal arrangements, in accordance with budgetary parameters for the cross-country and track & field programs.

  • Other duties as assigned by the head coaching staff.
