A.   POSITION PURPOSE
 

The University competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the West Coast Conference (WCC). Reporting to the Head Coach of Men’s Golf, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting in all aspects of running a Division I Men’s Golf program including, but not limited to: match preparation, teaching and coaching; practices and player conditioning; recruitment and retention of student-athletes; program administration; academic integrity; and donor/alumni public relations and youth programs. In addition, the assistant coach is responsible for abiding by all conference and NCAA regulations to ensure departmental compliance. 

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist with creation and implementation of effective match, practice and conditioning plans for the student-athletes.

• Work with Head Coach to develop effective training exercises and strategies for player improvement.

• Assist and/or monitor strength and conditioning programs as needed.

2. Direct or assist with recruitment of the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial and regulatory standards and policies established by the University, WCC and NCAA.

• Maintain a comprehensive recruiting database system.

• Assist with the identification of potential student-athletes.

• Arrange and prepare on-campus visits.

3. Assist with administrative responsibilities of the Men’s Golf program in an efficient and responsible manner.

• Work with various areas of the department (equipment room, facilities, etc.) to ensure proper communication of schedules and other needs.

4. Assist in the monitoring and verification of program related expenditures and revenues.

• Assist with travel arrangements and finances.

• Ensure fiscal responsibility by administering the program's budget within University and Department guidelines.

5. Assist External Relations and Development staff with program and department promotion and events.

• Assist Media Relations with media-related requests.

• Assist Development with donor and alumni relations that may include fundraisers and special events.

6. Skillfully communicate with colleagues and student-athletes. 

• Serve as a role model and example of sportsmanlike conduct and of the qualities taught by Santa Clara University.

• Maintain active communication with internal constituencies.

7. Display commitment to the academic success of student-athletes.

• Work cooperatively and effectively with Academic Support Services staff.

• Assist and/or monitor study hall program.

8. Abide by all conference, department, university, and NCAA policies and regulations and assist to ensure departmental compliance.

• Successfully pass NCAA recruiting test.

• Attend all compliance seminars and reviews.

• Maintain current CPR certification.

9. Other Duties as Assigned.

 

C.   PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION

Occasionally provides work direction to student managers.

D.   GENERAL GUIDELINES

• Is aware of and abides by all NCAA, WCC and other applicable rules and regulations.

• Sets a positive example of behavior for students and the Santa Clara University community.

• Represents Santa Clara University in the community.

E.   QUALIFICATIONS
 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.

This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

1. Knowledge

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the sport of golf required.

2. Skills

• Demonstrated success at the collegiate or professional level.

• Strong, positive communication skills as a coach and as a member of the Department of Athletics.

3. Abilities

• Ability to interact positively with students and fellow coaches.

4. Education

• Bachelor's degree required.

5. Years of Experience

• Minimum of three years of demonstrated success in a coach or playing position at the Division I level required.
