The successful candidate will assist the head rowing coach in the organization and management of the highly competitive William Smith women’s rowing programs at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The position responsibilities will include teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition; supporting student-athletes’ academic success; recruiting prospective students; fundraising; developing alumni, alumnae and parent relations; administrative tasks; and other duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities:
· Teaching and Coaching:
o teach student-athletes all related principles and rules of the sport
o assist in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of practice and race plans
o operate digital platforms to develop training and race plans
o maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgment on and off the water
o be knowledgeable of and compliant with all institutional, department, NCAA and Liberty League policies, rules and regulations
· Counseling and Advisement of Student-Athletes:
o develop and maintain effective communication with student-athletes
o reinforce academic success as a priority
o encourage student-athletes to foster a positive relationship with faculty, deans and staff
· Recruiting:
o effectively recruit prospective student-athletes under the direction of the head coach and consistent with the Colleges’ mission
o maintain the sport-specific recruiting electronic database
o recruit student-athletes who coincide with the academic profile of HWS students
o maintain open communication with other William Smith coaches regarding shared prospects
· Professional Development:
o maintain active membership in professional sport organizations
o pursue formal and informal educational opportunities
o participate in department seminars
· Community Engagement/Fundraising
o promote the sport and William Smith Athletics in area communities
o maintain a positive relationship with interested constituents (e.g. youth groups, civic organizations, media)
o assist in the planning and management of fundraising activities
o develop a positive relationship with William Smith alumnae and parents
· Operational Team Responsibilities (approximately 30% of full time responsibilities):
o serve on Athletics Department operational teams (e.g. game day management)
o assist with special events (e.g. Awards Banquet, Heron Hall of Honor)
o assist with department initiatives
o represent the department on campus committees
This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Evening and weekend work are required. Salary is $48,715 annually.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. A minimum of four years of rowing and/or coaching experience at the junior, elite, or college-level required. Candidates with US Rowing Level 1, 2, or 3 certifications preferred. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential to teach, lead and counsel college student-athletes and have enthusiasm for the recruiting duties of the position. The candidate must be a person of integrity, high ethical standards, have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy and mission of HWS Athletics. Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position. The candidate must be willing to work nights and weekends.
