Wheeling University, an NCAA Division II Catholic university and member of the Mountain East Conference, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Coach, Women’s Basketball. The Assistant Coach will support the Head Coach in the overall development and administration of the Women’s Basketball program, including student-athlete development, recruiting, scouting, practice and game preparation, and day-to-day program operations. The position is responsible for carrying out all duties associated with supporting a competitive NCAA Division II program while promoting the University’s mission, values, and commitment to student-athlete success. The position requires frequent travel, including overnight and extended trips, as well as a flexible work schedule that may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during the basketball season and recruiting periods.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborates with the Head Coach and Graduate Assistants to plan, organize, and conduct individual skill development and team practice sessions.
• Provides instruction, feedback, encouragement, and coaching to student-athletes of varying skill and performance levels.
• Evaluates student-athletes’ strengths, areas for development, and potential, and implements strategies to improve individual and team performance.
• Establishes and reinforces expectations for professional behavior, teamwork, accountability, and commitment.
• Creates a positive, supportive, and competitive team environment that encourages student-athletes to challenge themselves and develop their abilities.
• Builds positive relationships with student-athletes and staff through effective communication, active listening, encouragement, and professional conduct.
• Assists with the recruitment and scouting of prospective student-athletes by evaluating athletic ability, academic performance, and overall fit with the University and athletic program.
• Communicates the University’s mission, vision, and values to prospective student-athletes and their families.
• Assists with recruiting activities and maintains proficiency with recruiting software and related technology.
• Follows all NCAA, conference, and University rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to coaching, recruiting, and student-athlete participation.
• Assists with scholarship coordination in accordance with the University’s approved scholarship model.
• Scouts opponents, analyzes team and individual performance, and assists with developing game plans and strategies.
• Assists with the preparation of team schedules, itineraries, travel arrangements, and other logistical needs.
• Assists with program operations, including budgets, purchasing uniforms and equipment, and coordinating pre-season medical examinations for student-athletes.
• Assists the Sports Information Director with sports information and promotional activities, including media guides, press releases, community relations, and other program-related communications.
• Represents the University and athletic program professionally at practices, competitions, recruiting events, and other sport-specific activities.
• Promotes University and athletic department events and activities and supports community and campus engagement initiatives.
• Prioritizes responsibilities effectively, meets established deadlines, and completes assigned duties with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrates initiative, adaptability, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous personal and professional development
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Collegiate playing experience required; prior experience serving on a collegiate coaching staff preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must maintain NCAA Rules Compliance Certification and current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications, as required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to comply with NCAA, conference, and University policies, procedures, rules, and requirements. Must maintain required documentation, certifications, and annual training.
• Ability to effectively communicate, take and provide direction, build positive relationships, and work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaches, staff, and other University personnel.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively prioritize responsibilities and meet established deadlines.
• Ability to work with student-athletes of varying skill and performance levels and provide appropriate instruction, feedback, encouragement, and support.
• Ability to represent the University and athletic program in a professional and positive manner.
• Proficiency with, or ability to become proficient in, recruiting software and other technology used to support coaching and recruiting activities.
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, and using hands to handle or feel objects; lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds; reaching with hands and arms; climbing and balancing; and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Requires close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions and environments with moderate to loud noise levels.
