Position Purpose:
Guided by the tenets of the Bates Mission Statement, the Assistant Dean serves as a member of the Admission team to recruit and enroll an academically talented and diverse class of students. The position will assist with various projects, including but not limited to athletic recruitment, international recruitment, and transfer review coordination. The Assistant Dean will work closely with multiple teams within the office as well as campus partners and counselors from secondary schools and community-based organizations.

Position Purpose:
Guided by the tenets of the Bates Mission Statement, the Assistant Dean serves as a member of the Admission team to recruit and enroll an academically talented and diverse class of students. The position will assist with various projects, including but not limited to athletic recruitment, international recruitment, and transfer review coordination. The Assistant Dean will work closely with multiple teams within the office as well as campus partners and counselors from secondary schools and community-based organizations.
Manage geographic territories as assigned; coordinate 4 to 6 weeks of in-person and virtual travel per year; develop an annual recruitment plan and evaluate effectiveness of each activity; recommend improvements and changes in strategy as appropriate
Represent Bates at high school visits, college fairs, and other off- and on-campus recruiting events.
Lead on-campus and virtual information sessions and counsel families through the admission and financial aid process.
Engage with key constituents such as alumni, current students, high school counselors, and community-based organizations and respond to concerns or inquiries from prospective students, parents, college/guidance counselors, coaches, alumni/ae, and other constituents.
Attend designated conferences and/or other professional development activities
Work in pairs or as part of a team to evaluate first-year and transfer applications
Athletic Liaison: Serve as one of four liaisons to the Athletics Department; complete athletic pre-reads on prospective student-athletes who are being recruited for several teams (specific teams TBD); partner with coaches to determine goals and needs for each team and to help them think strategically about their roster of recruits; provide admission committee with information from athletic department.
Transfer Coordinator: Serve as point person for all transfer inquiries; partner with Senior Associate Dean of Admission & Director of Selection to update the transfer reading manual and conduct transfer reading training; ensure the completion of reading all transfer applications by all deans and counselors; work closely with Director of Admission and VP for Enrollment and Dean of Admission & Financial Aid to select 5-10 transfer students each year; work with Yield and Communications teams on yield efforts for transfers; ensure statistics, requirements, and deadlines are all up to date on our website and in publications; work with operations team and student financial services to complete applications; partner with Registrar’s Office on transfer applicants’ credit evaluations.
International Recruitment Team: serve on the international team to assist in recruiting a globally diverse and talented cohort of international students.
Counselor Advisory Board Coordinator: Work with the VP for Enrollment and Director of Admission to create, select, and manage this council of counselors from high schools and community-based organizations in order to get a pulse of the admission landscape from the perspective of the counselors, help us understand how we can improve or change our relationships with school and/or CBOs, think through new marketing messages and/or new policies again from the perspective of counselors and students, and spread all the great news about Bates to their communities and networks; schedule meetings, develop agendas, and organize accommodations and travel logistics for board members.
Other duties as assigned by Director of Admission and/or Dean of Admission and Financial Aid.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's degree required.
Experience
2-4 years of experience in admission or in a student/customer service, academic, and/or non-profit setting are preferred but not required.
Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts.
Skills and Knowledge
Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse community.
Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentation), analytical, and problem solving skills.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
Impeccable organizational (time, task, project management) skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
Strong interpersonal skills (a sense of humor is a plus) with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Must be flexible, collaborative and have a positive attitude.
Genuine curiosity about the world, particularly higher education and issues of diversity and access.
Proficiency in basic data management systems (preferably Slate) and basic computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically for four to six weeks, concentrated in the fall and spring.
Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
