The Athletics Department is seeking an Assistant Director: Integrated Communications. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.The mission of the OSU Department of Athletics is to Go Build Excellent, Authentic, Visionary Student-Athletes (GO B.E.A.V.S.). The Integrated Communications unit handles all the department’s media activities. The Assistant Director is responsible for creating and maintaining the national public face of the Athletic Department and Oregon State University based upon national standards set forth in the industry. Must make appropriate decisions within hardware and software capabilities of the Athletic Department to maximize its exposure to the correct national and local media outlets on a national level, as well as being responsible for the promotion of student-athletes and coaches for the Conference and NCAA recognition. The work of the unit is highly visible in a national public arena and Assistant Directors must be aware of the ever-changing environment and make adjustments in this environment independently.This position serves as manager and acts as a liaison between media representatives and the coaches, administrators and student athletes (coordinates most or all game-day activities as they relate to communications). The Assistant Director is also responsible for promoting sports through press releases featuring upcoming events (osubeavers.com), game story recaps (osubeavers.com), social media integration, scheduling of media opportunities, as well as keeping a wide array of records for all intercollegiate athletics. The position also manages or assists in the management of the team’s assigned social media accounts. This position makes independent decisions and recommendations to the Assistant Athletic Director for Integrated Communications or coach regarding reactive and proactive media responses and the appropriate outlets. The Assistant Director is responsible for providing professional writing assistance in publicizing the intercollegiate varsity sports programs within the Athletic Department and helps the Director of Communications identify media/programming opportunities for the Conference Network. The Assistant Director will provide media training to all student-athletes and coaches in their respective assignments. The position will function with considerable initiative and independence in the composition of original copy. This position also works closely with all other external departments within OSU Athletics.

30% SOCIAL MEDIA Develops and monitors social media sites to deliver the proper message to fans, recruits, supporters of the program and media. Manages the sport specific accounts or works with program staff to develop a plan together for coverage. 30% SPECIFIC SPORTS ASSIGNMENT / MEDIA TRAINING Sports assigned to be determined. Potentially other sports or a change of focus as determined by staffing needs. Arranges public engagements for head and assistant coaches. Independently manages all media relations issues for the program. Trains all student-athletes and coaches in talking and working with the public media, including blogs, radio, internet, television, social media, etc.15% GAME DAY RESPONSIBILITIES Works game-day, as assigned, to coordinate all media outlets, press row personnel and appropriate exposure on internet, radio, TV and social media.10% BRAND COORDINATION Works with the sports marketing unit to brand and enhance the overall appearance of OSU Athletics and deliver each sport a unique positioning in recruiting efforts. 10% MEDIA RELATIONS Independently develops effective working relationship with local, regional and national media covering Oregon State athletic events/competition. 5% SUPERVISION / LEADERSHIP Assigns student work to help maintain workload and assist in the overall success of the communications team.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field AND One (1) year (or equivalent part-time) of progressively responsible experience in a professional or intercollegiate athletic Communications/Sports Information office. Working knowledge of the web and StatCrew software. Experience running social media accounts for a team, unit, department or other. Proven excellent written and verbal communications skills. Excellent relationship-building skills. Ability to solve problems, make decisions, multitask, and prioritize ongoing and new projects successfully. Ability to work collaboratively with athletic communications, athletic marketing, coaches, and others related to media events and announcements. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Solid understanding of new social media concepts and Conference Network/Enterprises. Division 1 experience in Communications.
Work environments include office and arena. Travel with teams and weekend events are required.
