JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Learning Services will assist in co-managing the tutoring and mentoring program. They also will support the department’s programming by identifying student-athletes academic skill sets and designing the systems to help them achieve their desired academic outcomes. Successful candidates will have an understanding of UDL (Universal Design for Learning), multicultural pedagogy, and educational psychology including, but not limited to, educational testing and assessments. This position will assist in the hiring, training, and managing of the students who comprise Student-Athlete Success Program's (SASP) tutoring, mentoring, and coaching staff. This position will have a specific caseload of student-athletes. They will be responsible for the development and execution of individualized learning plans (ILPs) through the creation of goals and education on strategies to achieve goals. They will work in collaboration with committee members to design and implement a successful summer bridge program. This individual will provide learning support for both basketball programs as well as study hall oversight. This individual will work within the University of Connecticut, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) general rules and regulations, and all standards regarding academic integrity.

This position functions in a fast-paced environment, with a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends as needed. The incumbent must possess excellent communication skills, adaptability, and the highest personal and professional integrity standards. This position requires attention to detail and aesthetics and a strong knowledge base of Microsoft Office, especially Teams and Google platforms.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Works as a learning specialist to provide individualized academic support to a specific cohort of student-athletes.
2. Co-manage the mentoring and tutoring program including recruiting, hiring, training, and managing the tutoring, and mentoring staff and the students participating in those programs.
3. Determines specialized assistance for student-athletes based on a review of background information and current academic performance. This includes making referrals to the Learning Services Director for further testing as necessary.
4. Develops and executes individualized learning plans (ILPs) through the creation of goals and education on strategies to achieve goals.
5. Directs Summer Bridge Program and works in collaboration with committee members to design and implement successful programming.
6. Teaches first-year experience courses on learning each semester to support college transition and success strategies.
7. Act as the main point of contact for basketball and Olympic sports counselors by conducting regular meetings.
8. Oversees study hall for both basketball programs.
9. Responsible for semesterly and yearly comprehensive program reports for the entire Learning Services unit as well as sending out progress reports.

10. Acts as a point of contact with the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) by managing all communication, communicating with counselors regularly regarding relevant student-athletes, assisting student-athletes in receiving accommodations, conducting semesterly audits on students registered with CSD to monitor accommodation use and progress towards Q and language adjustments, as applicable.
11. Maintains detailed records and paperwork associated with educational plans for at-risk student-athletes.
12. Maintains knowledge of all applicable NCAA, University, and Division rules pertaining to monitoring, tutoring, and academic integrity.
13. Maintains confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.
14. Keeps SASP Director regularly informed of potential problems with students, tutors, and monitors.
15. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and three to four years of position-related experience in providing academic support and/or advising/counseling students.
• Ability to build rapport with students, support networks, and university partners.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population, faculty, staff, and university constituents.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Teams, and Google platforms.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
• Experience in supporting high school students or undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in a related field and one year of position-related experience in providing academic support and/or advising/counseling students at the collegiate level.
• Concrete working knowledge of NCAA academic integrity rules and regulations.
• Able to demonstrate the ability to teach Executive Functioning Skills and other study skills and related topics.
• Experience in managing and coordinating study halls and tutor training.
• Experience with Retain/Teamworks or other learning management systems.
• Experience working with students with learning challenges.
• Knowledge of ADA law related to postsecondary education.
• Worked in an academic support unit that emphasized student success at a Division I level.
