| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Music at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a BMus and BA in Music and an MA and Ph.D. in Musicology for undergraduate and graduate students. Our educational mission is to teach music majors, provide general music courses for non-major students, and guide graduate students as researchers and teachers. We serve the public by presenting performances and academic lectures by students, faculty, and guest artists and scholars. We offer over one hundred concerts and recitals each year. We have a state-of-the-art auditorium which includes recording (audio and video) capabilities as well as lighting and sound systems. We have a total of 60 full-time and part-time faculty who teach approximately 2500 students during the academic year and another 200 during summer school. Through our teaching, research, and creative activities we share music’s multiplicity of forms and meanings, connecting the study of music to the larger understanding of societies, and affirming music’s importance as an expression of humanity.

| Position Summary |
The Assistant Director of University Bands is a permanent, non-tenure track position housed in the Department of Music and funded equally by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Athletics. The position is student-facing and interacts with multiple campus partners on a regular basis. The Assistant Director is involved with all aspects of the administrative, operational, and aspirational aspects of the UNC band program.
As the assistant director of the Marching Tar Heels, the selected candidate will be involved with development of show concepts, repertoire selection, and instruction. The selected candidate will direct the pep band at women’s basketball games, liaise with professional and student staff, and have various administrative responsibilities related to the band program.
The Assistant Director of University Bands will also teach within the Department of Music in assignments that align with their expertise and interests, and that meet the instructional needs of the department. Those teaching assignments may include a combination of academic courses, ensemble conducting, individual lessons, and/or coachings. The teaching load will comprise three courses per year in addition to involvement with the athletic bands.
The position is inherently collaborative, and the selected candidate will be expected to communicate effectively with many different constituencies including band members, the student leadership within the bands, the administrators and staff in both the athletic department and the music department, colleagues within the UNC Band program, and the general public. In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to develop a presence in the North Carolina school band community through serving as a clinician, recruiting, and participating in conferences and other band-related events.
The position requires regular evening and weekend obligations, travel on occasion, and frequent activity during university breaks.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to teaching, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction.

| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
The successful candidate must have experience conducting bands at the secondary or collegiate level, working with a marching band, and recruiting. An attention to detail, demonstrated ability to manage large projects, excellent organizational skills, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with many different constituencies, and demonstrated effectiveness in interfacing with students in many different settings is required. A valid driver’s license is also required.

| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Doctorate (or equivalent professional experience) and experience working with a collegiate marching band is preferred. Familiarity with Pyware and the UDB and FlipFolder apps, the ability to arrange music for athletic bands, and familiarity with Filemaker and/or other data management software is preferred.

| Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
The Assistant Director of University Bands must be able to assist with moving/loading heavy instruments and equipment related to concert and athletic bands, have the ability to adapt to changing situations with ease, and be an effective leader in high-pressure and time-sensitive performance settings.

| Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
