Assistant Football Coach

The Athletics Department at Whittier College is seeking an Assistant Football Coach.

The Assistant Coach will be responsible for assisting in the organization and management of an NCAA Division III Football program in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the Athletics Department and Whittier College.  The Candidate must exhibit excellent communication skills, have high ethical standards, and is expected to contribute to the overall atmosphere of the Department of Athletics by establishing and maintaining positive, team-oriented working relationships with all members of the athletic department and the College.  The successful candidate will have experience in recruiting, developing, and retaining student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level.  The candidate must also possess the leadership ability to help coordinate a successful defensive unit, manage, supervise, and evaluate, and provide leadership for the defensive coaching staff. They must possess the knowledge and experience to coach position groups effectively. At the direction of the Strength and Conditioning coach, this position will also be expected to act as the lead staff member and provide expertise in training, guidance, and supervision while overseeing the overall comprehensive strength and conditioning portion of the program. 

The position will also entail secondary Strength and Conditioning responsibilities, as well as athletic administrative duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics.

Salary Range: $70,304 annual; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions of the Job

• The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Serve and assist the Head Coach to establish a highly competitive NCAA and SCIAC Football program.
• Attend all practice and training sessions, contests, team events, and meetings.
• Carry out assignments, including, but not limited to participation in on-field instruction, scouting of opponents, scouting of prospective student-athletes, coaching meetings, video sessions, weekly recruiting sessions, and overall program evaluation decisions.
• Exhibit high ethical standards, and the ability to work in a team orientated environment.
• Coaching and organizing all practices and games. 
• Recruit a high quality student-athletes in the sport of Football 
• Ability to work within the established budget. 
• Overseeing and maintaining a regional territory of recruitment of football student-athletes by searching, evaluating, and recruiting student-athletes who fit both the academic and football requirements of the institution.
• Focus on the retention of student athletes.
• Provide expertise in training, guidance, and supervision while overseeing the overall comprehensive strength and conditioning portion of the program. 
• Provide scheduling and scheduling conflict resolutions. 
• Serve as a Point person in team travel planning and support for experience growth for the team and Student Athletes
• Monitoring student-athlete academic progress
• Assist in competitive game day preparation and execution
• Committed to comply with all policies and regulations governing the NCAA.
• Adhere to NCAA, SCIAC, Whittier College, and Athletic Department policies and procedures.
• Always be responsible for the conduct of all student-athletes in the program, including during practice and training sessions, competition, travel, at hotels, in locker rooms, etc.
• Show respect for officials, media personnel, opposing coaches, parents, fans, student-athletes, fellow coaches, and school staff.
• Work to promote school spirit and enthusiasm.
• Help develop teamwork, attitude, character, effort, and strict adherence to rules of training and conduct. 
• Support all student-athletes in their pursuit of academic excellence.
• Work to promote unity on the coaching staff within the framework of the athletic department.
• Perform any other duties or responsibilities directly related to the coaching position as directed by the Head Football Coach and/or Executive Director of Athletics.

Position Coach

• Oversee and coach an defensive position group.
• Motivate and teach fundamentals, technique and scheme for an defensive position.

Non-essential Functions of the Job

• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrate ability to teach, motivate, and develop student-athletes.
• Serve as Event Day manager for athletic contests as assigned.
• Participate actively in campus events and on College committees to support the College community and provide a leadership presence.
• Must be a person of high integrity with high educational standards while exhibiting a strict adherence to NCAA, conference, university and department rules and regulations as well as a solid commitment to academic, student-athletes' welfare, ethnic diversity and gender equity.
• Must have experience working with diverse constituencies, sensitivity to multicultural issues, and the ability to work productively in a collaborative environment to meet deadlines and expectations.
• Must competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
• Market, manage, and instruct youth camps, clinics, and community engagement efforts in summer and throughout the academic year. 
• Ability to make decisions in place of the Head Coach if required.

Position Specifications and Requirements

Knowledge and Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Masters Preferred.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Electronic Devices and Software: Institutional requirement to understand and operate specific programming needing to track and maintain student recruitment and eligibility. 

License(s) and Certificate(s): First-Aid and CPR Certified. A valid California Class C CA driver’s license with a good driving record is required. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
