Title: Assistant Football Coach - TE

Position Purpose: The Assistant Coach is responsible for aiding the Head Coach in administering a competitive NCAA Division III intercollegiate football program. This position supports the development of student-athletes through mentorship, guidance, leadership opportunities, community building, and a commitment to social justice. The Assistant Coach focuses primarily in the areas of skill development, training, conditioning and performance of student-athletes, along with planning and directing recruitment and fiscal management of the program. This is a professional assistant coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of affiliated national, regional, and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the NCAA, the NESCAC Conference, and the College. In addition to their instructional duties, assistant coaches work in partnership with the Office of Admission to recruit, admit, and enroll an academically and athletically talented and diverse team of students. The position will assist with various recruitment projects assigned according to previous experiences and program needs. The Assistant Coach will have significant night and weekend commitments. The Assistant Coach will also have responsibilities to support the Athletics Department for operational initiatives, referred to as a secondary duty. This position reports to the Head Coach.  

Job Duties: Assists the Head Coach in all aspects of running a successful and highly competitive DIII athletics program. Provides leadership, support and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes, including advising team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters. Provides individual and group instruction to students on competition strategy, conditioning, and technical skills.  Develops and implements strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and a team. Works closely with the strength and conditioning and sports medicine staff to ensure that student-athletes are physically prepared for competition. Works with the head coach and equipment manager to ensure the safety of student athletes and coaches through monitoring the condition of athletic equipment and coordinating the selection, purchase, fitting and maintenance of team equipment, uniforms and supplies. Connects and refers students to student support and success services across campus (i.e. Accessible Education, Peer Learning Commons, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Services, Sports Medicine) and may direct the coordination of services for the student. Assists in the recruitment of student-athletes as directed by the head coach, which typically includes serving as the first point of contact for potential students and families, maintaining communication throughout the recruitment process, evaluating athletic talent and making recommendations for enrollment.  Ensures full compliance with NESCAC and NCAA guidelines and ethical principles in all aspects of the recruiting process with an emphasis on equity and inclusion. Represents Bates at high school visits, college fairs, and other off- and on-campus recruiting events. Arranges team travel transportation arrangements through the Senior Administrative Coordinator for Athletics and team lodging arrangements through the department Business Manager. Makes travel decisions according to protocol and within budget requirements. Adheres to college policies in utilizing the college-issued credit card for team-related expenses, and reconciles expenses as necessary. Assists head coach with film review and game strategy. Maintains an active social media presence for the team posting daily to every three days. Provides support in carefully tracking expenditures for all team accounts to ensure fiscal responsibility. Adheres to financial protocols when making purchasing recommendations or decisions. Assists with approved fund-raising activities as requested and coordinates all such efforts through the Director of Athletics and Office of College Advancement Compiles data and reports in a timely fashion when requested by the head coach or a senior level administrator. Synthesizes information and makes recommendations to leadership.  Understands and adheres to and enforces all policies and procedures of the Department of Athletics and the College as well as the rules and regulations of the NESCAC, the NCAA and other authorities that may legitimately influence the intercollegiate athletics program. Completes all required departmental and institutional training and certification programs and actively participates in available professional development opportunities. 20% of an Assistant Coach’s Job is performing secondary duties to support department operations. Examples of secondary duties include and are not limited to game management, facility operations, club and intramural sports, compliance, strength & conditioning, marketing & promotion, campus liaisons, departmental initiatives & committees, student employment and programming, camps & clinics, and others.
