Job Description
SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for assisting the Head Rodeo Coach in providing program leadership for recruiting, instruction, and coaching of rodeo students for the Texas A&M University-Commerce rodeo team. The Assistant Rodeo Coach works extensively with the Head Coach, students, faculty, staff, and various individuals and supporters of rodeo.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Assistant Rodeo Coach will have high standards of professional and ethical conduct and is accountable for all aspects of the Lions Rodeo program. The Assistant Rodeo Coach will aid the Head Rodeo Coach in the following:
Recruiting, instruction, and coaching duties of all rodeo athletes for the Lions Rodeo program.
Participate in fund raising activities for the Lions Rodeo program and work with the Alumni Association to aid in establishing relationships that promote the sport of rodeo.
Manage membership and eligibility in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) for the university and ensure rodeo students are making satisfactory academic progress towards graduation.
Train student athletes in conditioning, skill, and strategy development for rodeo competition.
Be comfortable in working with students of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Supports the Head Rodeo Coach to prepare, approve, direct and maintain the annual budget as well as keep accurate financial records.
Insure all rules and regulations of Texas A&M University-Commerce and the NIRA are maintained, as well as policies, procedures, and laws relating to the sport of rodeo are followed.
Supports the Head Rodeo Coach to serve as the college liaison to the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) and on committees as required by the NIRA, university, and/or department.
Provide proper care and management for the college owned and leased livestock used for rodeos and practice events including proper feeding and nutrition, doctoring, and transportation.
Maintain all rodeo facilities and equipment, including rodeo arena and barns used for rodeo athletes.
Insure personal safety and the safety of others at all times as expected in the sport of rodeo.
Submit attendance records, travel, and reimbursement requests in a timely manner.
Work with individuals on the A&M-Commerce campus and broader community to support economic development within the Commerce community related to rodeo activities.
Establish and advise a Rodeo Club at A&M-Commerce and ensure it maintains its good standing status with the student organization department.
This job description shall include, but is not necessarily limited to, the above duties. May temporarily perform other duties assigned to maintain operations and services.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Marginal Functions will vary with the specific assignment and depend on the particular unit or function for which the person is responsible. Consideration will be given on a case by case basis and reassignment of marginal duties will be made when appropriate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university. And, two years of rodeo experience. OR an associate’s degree and 4 years of rodeo experience related to rodeo.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Knowledge of college rodeo best practices and procedures.Knowledge of each of the college rodeo events, and effective coaching methods for each. Knowledge of NIRA policies, procedures, and services provided for collegiate sports. Knowledge and experience of basic care of rodeo livestock and equipment. Knowledge and experience of computer skills in word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and other basic functions (email, internet, etc.). Knowledge and experience in maintenance of rodeo facilities. Skills in development and coordination of rodeo events including marketing and publicity. Possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Ability to perform extensive physical labor. Ability to ride a horse and demonstrate effective horsemanship skills in rodeo. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with individuals and groups. Ability to recruit and retain quality student athletes.Ability to train employees, volunteers, and students in operation of the Lions Rodeo program. Ability to use standard office equipment (copier, fax machine, etc.). Ability to demonstrate high moral and ethical behavior. Must be student centered/oriented and be supportive of the university philosophy.
Licensing/Professional Certifications: Must possess a valid driver license and proof of insurability.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree in the field of agriculture or related area in athletics.
Knowledge and/or experience with student academic advising.
Knowledge and/or experience with social media and marketing.
Experience coaching in a college or university setting.
Evidence of developing resources on and off campus in support of programs.
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:
Supervise students, student workers, and volunteers.
