| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Athletic Outdoor Facilities Unit is responsible for the administration, management and maintenance of all Athletic Facilities, including Kenan Stadium, Boshamer Stadium, Dorrance Field, Koman football practice complex, Karen Shelton Stadium, Eddie Smith Field House, Anderson Softball Stadium, Finley Athletic Fields, Chewning Tennis Center, Carmichael Arena, Ranson-Hammrick Cross Country Course, University Lake Boathouse, 220 Finley and 216 Finley as well as the associated buildings and grounds. These facilities are used by the Athletics Department’s 28 varsity programs, University organizations and the local community. This position is responsible for all matters relating to natural and synthetic turf grass management, while working in a unit that includes field and grounds maintenance. Works with athletic grounds staff on all projects and inspects completed work to ensure conformance to specifications (ACC, NCAA) and any contract requirements.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement proper turf-grass maintenance schedules and management practices. Ability to recognize, identify and treat turf grass insects and diseases that could damage the quality of turf. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to motivate and direct employees. Demonstrated technical knowledge and understanding of a variety of specialized machinery. Knowledge and experience with fertilizer and chemical spread formulas used in turf maintenance. Ability to communicate with coaches, staff, vendors, contractors, etc. A valid NC Driver’s license required.

| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Turf Program Certification/Associates/Bachelor’s Degree in Turfgrass Management or a related field and substantial work experience with stadium/athletic fields maintenance, facility management for major sports events, grounds maintenance and crew supervision. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with boom sprayer, fairway reel mower, and utility tractor. Thorough understanding and ability to manage crews who perform aerifying, top-dressing and sod work in athletic fields. Pesticide applicator and respirator (general use). Previous experience working with turfgrass in the transition zone. A valid pesticide license preferred.

| Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Ability to lift/move 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Must be able to manage a fast-paced, high volume environment.. Attention to detail essential. Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as required. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
