This position will have oversight of all aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging strategy, assessment, and education for cadet-athletes, coaches and professional staff within the athletics department. This position will work closely with the United States Military Academy (“USMA”) Chief Engagement and Retention Officer in advancing USMA efforts in these areas. Level of Decision Making

This position will have a high level of decision making which will include creating and maintaining DEI-related policies, procedures and making decisions which will affect outcomes.

Success Factors

Success in this position will be evaluated by the Supervisor on the employee’s performance in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: Commitment to AWPAA Mission, Vision and Values; and supporting the AWPAA Strategic Plan and Priority Results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

20% Strategic Planning

• Engage in continuous strategic policy and practice assessment to recommend changes that will advance diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging within AWPAA.
• Use data and supporting analytics tools to define and prioritize strategy, inform decisions, and measure results.
• Lead benchmarking analysis to make recommendations on trends in both the collegiate athletics industry and the USMA community.

20% Leadership

• Serve as the AWPAA’s NCAA Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee (“ADID”).
• Represent AWPAA on affiliated conference committees as assigned, including the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission.
• Coordinate with USMA Character Integrator and AWPAA leaders to include DEI themes as part of character education for Cadet-athletes, coaches and staff.
• Represent AWPAA in USMA-wide character meetings, activities and events.

20% Policy and Procedure

• Work with AWPAA and USMA constituents to implement principles and policies to recruit candidate pools that are representative of the composition of the Army officer corps through enhanced sourcing strategies.
• Work with AWPAA and USMA constituents to implement principles and policies for the effective retention of staff members and cadet-athletes through enhanced onboarding, learning and development, and succession strategies.

15% Training and Development

• Design and implement all aspects of DEI programming and education for staff, coaches and cadet-athletes.
• Develop and implement initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging for staff, coaches and cadet-athletes.
• Collaborate with the USMA Chief Diversity Officer in coordinating trainings for cadet-athletes and staff.

20% Sport Administration

• Serve as the primary sport administrator for assigned sport programs (2-3 anticipated). Responsibilities include, without limitation: budget oversight, traveling with the team, attending practices, establishing meetings with coaching staffs, and building rapport with Officer Representatives.
• Attend and participate in sport administrator meetings providing leadership and rules education for the sport administrator group.
• Make budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensure cost containment.

5% Other Duties as Assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervision of assigned sport-specific personnel.

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Perform duties in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time.
• Occasionally moves boxes weighing up to up to 30 lbs.
• The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer, printer, and phone.
• The person in this position frequently communicates with team members, USMA staff and vendors.
• Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
• Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Travel

Day and overnight travel may occur for athletic team competitions, professional meetings, and other events associated with AWPAA operations.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging.
• Experience with administrative leadership, decision-making, management and supervision.
• Good judgement and the ability to respond quickly and deal successfully under pressure in a very open and public environment.
• Leads by example with high personal expectations, character, and appropriate advocacy for the department.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with coaches, administrators, Cadet-athletes, prospective Cadet-athletes, parents, etc.
• Takes initiative, hardworking, ability/willingness to figure out solutions to problems independently, creative.
• Extremely organized, detail oriented, self-starter and intrinsically motivated.
• Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

• Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
• Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Pay Range

$85,000 - $95,000

This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position. AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
