The Associate Director of Athletics Advancement /Assistant AD for Advancement is a key contributor on the Athletics Development team in the Office of University Advancement at William & Mary. The athletics fundraising team is seated in two offices: University Advancement and William & Mary Athletics and is responsible for the leadership & strategy of private philanthropy to benefit W&M athletics programming.
The Associate Director / Assistant AD reports to the Executive Director of Athletics Advancement / Senior Associate Athletics Director for Advancement and is primarily responsible for philanthropic initiatives aligned with the university’s strategic plan in support of athletics priorities, collaborating with colleagues within University Advancement and across campus. The Associate Director will also liaise with the direct marketing team in the Office of University Advancement to develop the W&M Athletics annual giving program.
The Associate Director / Assistant AD is expected to develop an appropriate-sized major gift portfolio of prospects by the end of their second year in the position and will be expected to conduct an appropriate number of $50,000+ asks based on the portfolio. In addition to annual dollars raised, performance goals include the number of asks and closes, activity/move measures as well as the number of prospects identified and qualified for major gift potential. The Associate Director / Assistant AD will also liaise with the Annual Giving Direct Marketing team to develop a strategy for an annual fundraising plan that will support and advance W&M Athletics.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and or experience.
Understanding of philanthropy in higher education the impact it has on the future of higher education.
Experience (typically 3+ years) managing and developing communications plans for members, constituents, clients, or customers. Examples include outside sales, marketing or public relations, financial planning or wealth management, admissions or enrollment, and membership development, as well as academic fundraising or alumni engagement.
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary opportunities.
An entrepreneurial spirit, independence and ability to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision and collaborate while building consensus among colleagues and manage complex priorities and projects concurrently.
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.
Demonstrated experience in a higher education environment on an annual giving team.
Experience creating messaging for multiple audiences on multiple platforms, using list segmentation and data analysis to drive strategy.
Progressively responsible experience (typically 3+ years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, or customers, in a for profit or nonprofit setting, with the ability to innovate, implement dynamic change and exceed goals.
Volunteer and board management experience.
Hybrid (works remotely at least 1 day per week but not full-time)
