Position Overview:
Reporting to and under the general direction of the Athletic Director, the Assistant AD for Academics and Support Services provides comprehensive leadership and strategic guidance for the academic success of UCO student-athletes, as well as oversight of the Mike Ciskowski Academic Center. A central resource of support to student-athletes, the Assistant AD will have a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs of student-athletes and their academic development. Administers the guidelines for objective-based study hall expectations for student-athletes. Works collaboratively with the Assistant Registrar for NCAA Eligibility, Manager of Athletic Aid & Student Success and Faculty Athletics Representative, as well as other university staff, faculty, administrators, and coaches to support the educational experience of students. The incumbent shall apply a high degree of judgment in order to ensure compliance with associated rules and regulations.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions:
Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Help guide student-athletes to define and develop realistic educational plans.
· Design, plan, and coordinate, along with Assistant Registrar, various student success initiatives to improve student-athlete retention, graduation rates, and general student success.
· Work closely with Undergraduate Academic Advising staff to ensure incoming student-athlete inquiries are strategically coordinated and addressed in a timely manner while supporting academic integrity and policies.
· Assist student-athletes to develop accountability for their decisions and an understanding of how those decisions impact their success.
· Assist with any preparation of academic data for institutional, conference, and NCAA reports, as well as for assessment purposes in conjunction with Assistant Registrars.
· Facilitate periodic grade checks and communicate responses to coaching staff.
· Participate with incoming student orientation programs to assist with the transition to become a student-athlete at UCO.
· In conjunction with Academic Affairs, coordinate tutoring options for student-athletes as needed.
· Oversight of the Mike Ciskowski Academic Center including, but not limited to, scheduling of tutor rooms and coordination of student workers.
· Monitor, interpret, and apply MIAA and NCAA policies and rules associated with compliance and eligibility.
· Participate in monthly UCO Rules Education meetings facilitated by Athletics Compliance staff.
· Adhere to all OSRHE and UCO Academic Policies and Procedures.
· Coordinate annual UCO Athletics Academic Awards Banquet.
· Work with UCO Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to ensure communication policy between faculty/staff and coaches is being followed.
· Work directly with the Manager of Athletic Aid & Student Success as well as with the Office of Student Success to develop academic recovery plans for ineligible student-athletes.
· Collaborate with Assistant Registrar and selection committee(s) to determine academic award winners and endowed scholarship recipients.
· Perform other related duties as assigned and works as a cooperative/supportive team member in the UCO Athletic Department.
· Serve as sport administrator for assigned sports teams as directed by the Athletic Director.
Qualifications/Experience Required:
Requires a university degree or equivalent work experience that provides extensive knowledge of fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results. Extensive knowledge and comprehensive understanding of functional area. 3+ years of experience with leading planning, including program development and innovation, program prioritization, and assessment. Appropriate profession accomplishments and credentials.
Qualifications/Experience Preferred:
Master's degree. 2+ years in higher education advising role. 2+ years in NCAA-related role (compliance, eligibility, counseling/advising, etc.)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, human relations, public relations and organizational skills. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and interact professionally with all segments of the University community. Good report preparation, training and project management skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be detail oriented. Communicates effectively with a culturally diverse population.
