Specific Job Title: Assistant Coach - Dance
Reports to : Head Coach Dance
Job Summary:
The Assistant Dance Team Coach will be responsible for assisting in the management of all aspects of the St. John’s University dance team program. This individual will be responsible for providing leadership, innovative vision and strategic planning for an NCAA Division I member institution, part of the BIG EAST Conference.
The assistant dance team coach will assist the head dance team coach in the management of all personnel and aspects of the program to include the preparation of student-athletes through practice sessions and preparation for performances. This also includes assisting in the management and/or oversight at required athletic contests, campus and community events and other events with the premier focus being basketball home contests.
The assistant coach will assist in teaching technique, game day requirements, skills and choreography for team appearances.
Able to serve as a proxy for the head dance coach or cheer coach when needed.
The assistant dance team coach will represent the University and the Vincentian Mission of St. John’s, while also emulating the Athletic Department’s “Expect To Win” culture.
Essential Functions:
The assistant dance team coach will assist the head dance team coach by ensuring all safety procedures outlined by USA Cheer are strictly adhered to. Safety is the first-priority.
Help coordinate the timeliness and preparedness for all pregame activities. Any team appearance should always follow dress code policy and should be always uniform. This includes traveling to and from games. Ensure team remains positive and professional during games and maintains high standards of conduct and discipline.
Practices:
Assist in ensuring practices are structured and organized. Support the head coach and ensure a safe practice environment for every routine. Ensure all routines are within team capabilities. The assistant coach should be able to assist with the future development of the team members.
Required to be able to teach proper technique in Jazz, Pom, Hip Hop and Acro.
The assistant coach needs to be able to moderate routines based on skill level and the strength and coordination required for each technical element in the event the head coach is not present. The assistant coach should have the experience to assist the head coach in teaching and educating each team member on proper technique, specific to each skill.
Recruiting:
Assist in recruiting prospective students. Help ensure auditions and clinics are organized, well-advertised, and well-attended. Ensure all insurance guidelines and safety procedures are met.
Team Management & Representation:
Assist in team management. Join head coach in continually educating team members about their high-profile nature and the importance of representation of the university. Coach should continually encourage crowd engagement during athletic contests and ensure team members have a positive attitude whenever interacting with staff, faculty, and opposing teams. Coach must monitor appropriate attire for team travel, practice, games, and events.
Administration:
Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and BIG EAST Conference rules and regulations and St. John’s University policies and procedures. Maintain these operating guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program. Ensure team members always follow all ticket policies.
Games & Appearances:
Assist the head coach in providing management and oversight at all required athletic contests and events. The premier focus is basketball home contests. The team should always be on time and prepared for all pre-game activities. Team appearance should always follow dress code policy and should be always uniformed. This includes traveling to and from games. Ensure team remains positive and professional during games in lieu of many demands and distractions. Coordinate with Cheer and Pep Band during in game events.

This position monitors the student-athletes as well as volunteer staff.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand and perform duties on the basketball court.

Part time
8:00am – 6:00pm (Hours will vary)
Travel:
Travel is to basketball games at Madison Square Garden, UBS Arena, Barclays Center with the potential of postseason tournament travel. Additional travel will be to the UDA Nationals and UDA Camp.
