Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full time experience in an academic advising, counseling or student services setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Education or related field. Additional years (3+) of full time experience in an academic advising, counseling or student services setting. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program). Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program. Experience in higher education. Experience working with at risk students.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Academic Advisement Assistant will be responsible for providing academic support services as well as student services to Stony Brook student-athletes. They will assist in the evaluation, monitoring and development of the academic advising, tutoring, and academic progress and Life Skills programs in place for all student-athletes. The Athletic Academic Advisement Assistant will execute all duties in compliance with NCAA policies and procedures. Incumbent must have commitment to the successful academic and personal development of Stony Brook student-athletes.

At-Risk Student Athletes Program Planning

  • Create and implement detailed plans of action for student-athletes considered academically at-risk to assist in their academic success. This includes selection of appropriate courses, implementation of a tailored study hall model, organization of appropriate plan for Coaching Staff and Sport Supervisor communication and involvement, as well as responsibility for monitoring and facilitating the at-risk students’ academic endeavors on a daily basis with assignments, tests and deadlines. This includes, but is not limited to, assigning tutors for all classes in an at-risk student’s course load, or serving as a tutor for at-risk students, so as to best address his/her learning needs. As appropriate, will confer with the Director of Student-Athlete Academic Success campus advising office and the Student Accessibility and Support Center to assist in these processes, but realizing the ultimate responsibility rests within the Department of Athletics.
