Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Develops and implements plans, policies, procedures and programs that align with university standards, River States Conference and NAIA regulations, and applicable state and federal laws, while advancing the department's mission, upholding academic excellence, and supporting the overall well-being of student-athletes.
Holds primary responsibility for negotiating all radio and television contracts related to coaches shows and athletic events hosted in IU East facilities, ensuring full compliance with university and conference guidelines.
Establishes and continuously evaluates the department's organizational structure to ensure effective management of human resources.
Reviews and approves all employment contracts for coaches, trainers, administrative staff, and other athletics personnel.
Provides oversight of staff training and performance, assessing contributions to support the department's overall success.
Ensures strict adherence to equal opportunity standards in men's and women's athletics by staying informed of applicable legal requirements and collaborating with university staff to maintain compliance.
Leads and coordinates the certification process for the academic and health eligibility of all varsity student-athletes.
Consults with the Faculty Athletics Representative and Athletics staff to ensure compliance with NAIA and River States Conference rules, including the interpretation of applicable regulations. Addresses and resolves differing interpretations in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration (VCFA) and the Chancellor.
Reports to the VCFA and supports the Faculty Athletics Representative in investigating potential or confirmed rule violations.
Develops and implements long term strategic plans addressing operational and capital funding needs, as well as internal goals to strengthen the department through staff expansion and program development.
Prepares and submits reports, recommendations and supporting documentation to the Athletic Board, VCFA and Chancellor to inform decision-making related to program goals, academic priorities, capital expansion, staffing, budget appropriations, scheduling and other aspects of the University's athletics program.
Provides significant, high-quality opportunities in a variety of indoor and outdoor intramural activities to meet the needs of students. This includes team and individual/dual sport activities, tournaments, leagues, and fitness challenges.
Emphasizes cultural, social, athletic, artistic, and recreational activities that support personal growth and strengthen the connection between students and University.
Oversees vendors and independent contractors providing athletic training and medical services to student-athletes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to coordinating annual physicals, summer performance training, and the stocking of equipment in athletic training facilities both on and off campus, as applicable, and ensuring that all injured student-athletes receive appropriate care and treatment.
Develops budget guidelines, approves allocations for each area, and monitors adherence to budget as approved by the Athletic Board. Oversees fiscal operations in collaboration with athletics staff, maintaining overall responsibility for the department's finances and facilities to ensure sound business practices. Develops and implements strategies to enhance revenue generation, including marketing, promotions, and fundraising initiatives that strengthen donor support for athletic programs.
Works with VCAF and Director of Financial Aid to ensure all student athletes and coaches adhere to all Financial Aid guidelines and compliance.
Collaborates with academic units and faculty to ensure all student athletes have adequate academic support in alignment with IU academic standards.
Serves as the primary spokesperson of the Department, promoting the philosophy and mission of the intercollegiate athletics program to faculty, staff, students, alumni, media, and the broader community. Represents the Department at University, community, conference, NAIA, and other professional meetings and events.
Manages all transportation used by all athletic teams. Collaborates and coordinates team vehicle leases and maintenance with IU Transportation services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
Complies fully with all NAIA, applicable athletic conference, and Indiana University rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
Provides oversight, leadership, and supervision to all units in the athletics department. Advises, develops, and implements departmental policies and strategies including yearly and long-term strategic plans. Assesses and evaluates all areas of the athletics department.
Represents the athletics department to internal and external constituencies; enhances relationships and communication.
Directs the cultivation of relationships with individuals, corporate sponsors, and donors to generate revenue for the athletics program; develops strategies and an operations plan to meet capital, endowment, and annual giving goals.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
