Position Summary
To assist in all aspects of a model sports medicine department as it pertains to the health and well-being of the student-athletes of the University of St. Francis. This includes all daily evaluations of injuries, prevention, treatment, maintenance, care and rehabilitation of injuries.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
University Responsibilities
:
Demonstrate respect for the Catholic and Franciscan values of the University.
Demonstrate the ability to relate effectively to the student-athletes, coaches, staff, administration and University community.
Understanding and support of all policies and regulations, as well as all philosophies, of the University, Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Mid-States Football Association and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Represent the university and athletic department in a professional manner at various internal and external functions and in working with internal and external constituencies, including, but not limited to, the general public.
Participate in and promote a culture of continuing quality improvement for the University, athletic department and sports medicine department.
Function as an active member of committees or teams that relate to student health issues.
Participate in training programs and institutional emergency preparations.
Participate in and support University initiatives as they relate to student retention.
Administrative Responsibilities
:
Work in partnership with the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine in the development and management of protocols and policies pertaining to athletic training services.
Work in partnership with all athletic training staff (certified, student workers and interns) in providing necessary athletic training services.
Assist in the management of daily operations of all athletic training facilities.
Assist in the continued development and management of emergency action plans.
Assist in medical supply inventory management.
Assist in the management of all student health history, physical and immunization records.
Assist in the management of injury management/record keeping systems.
Maintain activity in sports medicine and health-related issues for student-athletes by attending local, regional and national conventions, meetings and educational presentations.
Maintain appropriate licensure and professional memberships.
Assist in the supervision and instruction of undergraduate work-study staff and First Responders, including scheduling, assigning duties, and approving time off.
Maintain confidentiality (
HIPAA
) for student health needs, health status and records.
Perform other administrative duties within the department as assigned.
Clinical Responsibilities
:
Administer medical coverage and emergency first aid for determined varsity athletic teams as needed.
Provide on-site injury care, evaluation and management, as well as appropriate follow-up treatment and rehabilitation as necessary, for all injuries sustained by the student-athletes of the University.
Serve as social media coordinator on all platforms to help with education of coaches and student-athletes.
Manage the athletic insurance coverage for all student-athletes, including completion and submission of insurance claims to the school’s secondary insurance provider.
Assist Head Athletic Trainer in the coordination and processing of all insurance claims.
Assist on daily collaboration with team physicians, orthopedic consultants and physician extenders to provide:
Pre-competition physical exam, health history and immunization updates.
Game coverage of contact sports by physicians and paramedic team; game coverage or phone access to physicians for other sports and practices.
Communication between physicians and coaching staff regarding student-athletes and their health status. Communicate status of student-athlete participation level and prognosis to coaches.
Follow-up injury care.
Discussion on alternative approaches with physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers and coaches in reference to standardized treatment protocols to make safe return to full participation post-injury.
Provision of assistance on all facets of application and management of concussion software and program. Work with the Office of Disability Services regarding concussion protocols for learning and academic accommodations.
Provision of assistance to the coaching staff in the development and implementation of mental health support programming for student-athletes.
Provision of assistance of coordination and implementation of injury prevention programs and customization of preventative strategies and programs to the coaches and teams when applicable.
Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education, counseling and prevention strategies related to nutrition, hygiene, mental health, alcohol, drugs, eating disorders and sexually transmitted diseases.
Assist in the management of electronic documentation of all maintenance of complete and accurate records of all athletic injuries and treatment rendered.
Coordinate rehabilitation for student-athletes during off-season periods (i.e. fall break, Christmas break, spring break and summer). Provide rehabilitation to student-athletes that live locally and/or on campus through the summer months.
Work with the University Counseling Center on student-athletes facing mental health and substance abuse issues.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in Athletic Training or equivalent of education and experience preferably sports or health sciences discipline (e.g. Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Movement Science or another related field).
Certified as an athletic trainer through
NATA
Board of Certification.
Illinois Athletic Trainers Licensure.
CPR
and First Aid Certified
Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position.
Ability and willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Willingness to support the Catholic and Franciscan values of the University.
Preferred Requirements
1 year of athletic training experience in intercollegiate athletics
Hours/Shift/Work Schedule
Hours vary, but do include weekends, nights and holidays. This 10-month position runs from August through May each academic year.
Physical Requirements of Position
Work is performed in both an office setting and at athletic arenas with moderate exposure to varying weather conditions, but minimal health or safety hazards. This is active and sedentary work, requiring the following physical activities: sitting, walking, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity, standing for long periods, working with medical equipment or machinery; and being able to walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop or crawl. Some travel will be required. Hours of work include some nights, weekends and holidays and may include working up to 12 hours per day. Also involves potential exposure to hazardous bodily fluids.
