Under work direction of the Director, Athletics, and under the medical direction of the team physician, the Athletic Trainer provides specialized health services, such as injury prevention, first aid, emergency care, and evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, to all student athletes.
Provide emergency care and first aid to student athletes during practice sessions, athletic contests and other sporting events; provide immediate care for faculty, staff and visiting teams as needed.
Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and basic life-saving techniques; recognize and provide appropriate care for shock, fractures, dislocations, sprains, internal injuries and other conditions; control external hemorrhaging and immobilize spinal injuries.
Provide care for surface wounds and skin conditions such as bruises, lacerations, abrasions, punctures, blisters, rashes and athlete's foot.
Evaluate acute and chronic injuries to student athletes; obtain pertinent medical history, examine and palpate tissues to detect swelling, pain or deformity; test for range of motion, muscle strength, ligament laxity and neurological damage.
Design, initiate and evaluate rehabilitation programs for acute, chronic and post-operative injuries; apply various types of manual therapeutic exercise; apply ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, whirlpools or other therapies as directed by the team physician.
Apply therapeutic and protective bandaging, wrapping, taping or padding; design and instruct athletes in the use of crutches and home rehabilitation programs.

Apply preventive taping and wrapping; design and fit customized preventive equipment such as braces and shoulder harnesses; assure proper fit of helmets, neck rolls and other protective gear.
Conduct health screenings to detect potential problems with flexibility, posture, strength and coordination; measure percentage of body fat and fat free weight.
Attend athletic events both on and off campus; travel to football games and other sports contests as requested.
Train, supervise and instruct student interns to work in the training room and assist in the care of student athletes.
Prepare and maintain records and reports related to student injuries, treatments, supplies and materials, medical histories, rehabilitation programs and others.
Operate a variety of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, specialized equipment and apparatus.
Communicate with coaches and athletic department staff, physicians, vendors and others regarding the prevention and health care services provided to student athletes.
Monitor the annual training room budget; bid and order supplies and equipment according to established procedures.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training or related field and two (2) years of athletic training experience, including operation of therapeutic modalities, at a high school, community college or university.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:
Athletic Trainer Certified (A.T.C.) by an organization recognized as a profession by the American Medical Association such as the National Athletic Trainers Association.
Valid California driver's license.
Current first aid and CPR certificates issued by the American Red Cross or other authorized agency.
