The Athletics Department is seeking an Athletic Trainer who possesses a valid certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) to administer care, prevention and treatment of injury for the College's student athletics program. This individual will demonstrate quick thinking and initiative in the delivery of emergency first aid in high stress situations and stay up to date on the industry's latest developments and best practices. They will be tasked with establishing and maintaining a treatment facility staffed by student workers and one additional part-time Athletic Trainer. In partnership with the Athletics Director, this candidate will be responsible for the creation and implementation of injury prevention, treatment and emergency action plans, student health records maintenance, and the inventory of first aid supplies and equipment.
This position is scheduled to work a permanent, full-time (variable hours schedule*, 40 hours per week, 11 months per year).

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.
Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.
About the Selection Process
The selection process tentatively consists of a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%), which may be preceded by a Training & Experience Evaluation (pass/fail). Candidates must be successful on all test parts to be placed on the eligibility list. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the six month life of the eligibility list, including full-time and/or part-time, permanent and/or temporary positions.
Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.
Certain positions within this classification may require employees to routinely and consistently read, speak, and/or write using a language other than English. Testing of eligible candidates’ bilingual proficiency will occur, as needed, as the District identifies positions that require this skill.

Test Retake Policy
Based on the District’s hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Candidates must wait a period of 90 calendar days between testing appointments before retesting. Candidates who are ineligible to participate in an upcoming test or interview due to the provided retake period will be notified via email, and will have their highest valid score(s) on any non-weighted (pass/fail) test parts applied toward that recruitment.

Identify, evaluate and manage athletic injuries and takes appropriate steps in managing injuries, including referral to appropriate medical facilities.
Performs a variety of care and treatment to student athletes to reduce and treat injuries; administers light, heat, cold, sound, water, exercise, manual therapy and other physical therapy treatments as directed by physicians; measures and fits braces, guards, and other protective devices; operates related therapy equipment as needed.
Provides long-term reconditioning and physical therapy programs as prescribed by appropriate medical personnel.
Evaluates, makes decisions and communicates to coaches’ preventative, rehabilitative care and participation status of injured athletes following guidelines from appropriate medical personnel.
Attends home and away practice sessions, games, and travels with athletic teams to provide first aid and emergency medical care to student athletes; treats and applies therapeutic tape, bandages and braces, wrapping, strapping and padding to injured athletes.
Records and maintains accurate and detailed injury and treatment records for student athletes.
Assists appropriate medical personnel with physical exams, clinical injury check-ups and health screening examinations for student athletes; reviews paperwork and records vital signs as needed.
Maintains the Athletic Training Room and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Assists in the development of off-season conditioning programs for athletes.
Assists athletes, students, and staff in the submission of athletic insurance claims.
Assists in the preparation of the budget for athletic first aid supplies and equipment.
Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature and are generally listed in descending order of importance.
Education Requirement:
Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, or a closely related field.
Experience Requirement:
Two years of experience working as a certified athletic trainer.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Licensure and/or Certification:
Valid certificate from the National Athletic Trainers Association as an Athletic Trainer.
Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillators (CPR/AED) certification
The incumbent may periodically be required to travel to a variety of locations. If required to operate a vehicle in the position, employees must demonstrate possession of a valid Driver’s License.
