This is a full time, exempt position that must adhere to the regulations stipulated in the Mount Marty University Handbook. In collaboration with the team physician, the Athletic Trainer provides preventative care, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions for Mount Marty’s intercollegiate athletic programs. This role serves as a vital communication link between the athlete, physician, coach, and family to determine the best route of treatment and return-to-play timeline.
Mission
To provide athletes with, and educate both athletes and coaches about, the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Rehabilitation
Coordinate the prevention, care, evaluation, and rehabilitation of injuries for varsity and junior varsity athletes.
Perform primary and secondary surveys or evaluations of all athletic-related injuries.
Responsible for taping, bracing, and padding of athletic-related injuries.
Deliver appropriate therapeutic modalities and distribute protocols for therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation.
Monitor ABC’s, CPR, First Aid, and other critical interventions during injury assessments.
Manage necessary referrals of musculoskeletal and other injuries to the appropriate medical provider and coordinate student-athlete appointments.
Work under the direction of the Team Physician to provide “medical clearance” for all injured student-athletes.
Administrative and Operations
Direct and supervise the daily operation of the athletic training room and coordinate work-study students.
Maintain and protect health, insurance, injury, and other necessary records (via Sportsware) ensuring strict confidentiality and compliance.
Assist in developing the training room budget and initiating the purchase of supplies and equipment.
Implement and coordinate emergency action plans for all athletic venues.
Maintain administrative records including injury reports, treatments, and insurance documentation.
Communication and Support
Provide medical coverage before, during, and after games/events; responsible for game/event preparation (ice, water, med kits, biohazard receptacles).
Consult, advise, and cooperate with coaches and athletes regarding wellness decisions and injury status.
Assist in the organization and coordination of community education programs in sports medicine, fitness, and wellness.
Maintain state licensure and national certification by completing necessary CEUs and required CPR/AED/First Aid certifications.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training required; Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field from a CAATE accredited program preferred
Experience: Two (2) years of post-graduate experience in the athletic training field (or equivalent) preferred
Certifications & Licensure:
BOC Certified Athletic Trainer in good standing
Current South Dakota State licensure (or eligible to obtain)
Current CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer or Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Schedule Adaptability: Must demonstrate extreme flexibility; the schedule is subject to frequent, last-minute changes due to weather, travel, and post-season play. The position requires nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (coolers, kits, equipment) and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Environmental Exposure: Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions and responsibility for monitoring environmental safety for athletes.
Travel: Ability to travel with athletic teams for away competitions as assigned.
