The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for providing preventative measures, acute care, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to intercollegiate student-athletes at UMass Boston. The incumbent will be responsible for providing athletic training services as directed by the Head Athletic Trainer to the University’s 19 NCAA Division III varsity athletic programs who compete in the Little East and New England Hockey Conferences. This includes, but is not limited to, managing potentially catastrophic, acute, and chronic athletic injuries within the scope of practice for athletic training, to include rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions. This position is expected to collaborate with the Head Athletic Trainer, and if necessary, the team physician and/or the strength and conditioning coach. Attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer is required. This position will work cooperatively with student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department staff. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the standards for the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the application of principles, methods and procedures of evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, pre-conditioning and reconditioning of athlete through the use of appropriate preventative and support devices, temporary splinting and bracing, therapeutic modalities through the administration of thermal, mechanical, electromagnetic, light energies, and evidence based treatment techniques under the direction of a physician. Athletic Training duties also include counseling and instruction to coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel and communities in the area of care and prevention of athletic injuries.
Coordinating and providing medical coverage for home and away contest as well as events as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer.
Coordinate and schedule medical referrals for student athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete safely.
Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that would enhance the sports medicine program.
Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in developing and fostering a positive relationship with the coaching staff and student-athletes.
Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in developing and maintaining communication with the University Health Services, Boston Children’s Hospital, and other external healthcare resources.
Maintain a positive working relationship with all administration, coaching, and institutional personnel.
Upholds confidentiality for student-athletes and their well-being.
Assist Head Athletic Trainer in the daily sports medicine area activities.
Ensure the physical maintenance of the sports medicine area and administrative duties.
Provide and maintain a descriptive electronic inventory of all sports medicine materials, equipment, and supplies.
Responsible for maintaining current electronic medical records, treatment plans and educational programs.
Coordinate athletic injury insurance claims.
Develop and provide education for various groups withing the university community including student-athletes, coaches, departmental staff, undergraduate and graduate students, university faculty and staff, and the surrounding community.
Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in providing supervision, mentoring, direction, and education of student athletic trainers in a clinical setting.
Assist in establishing and maintaining standards for NATA approved internship per accredited undergraduate student athletic trainer program.
Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with CPR requirements pertaining to Athletic Department Staff.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer or as designated by the Director of Athletics.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree, master’s degree preferred, in Athletic Training or related fields, and three years of experience as a certified athletic trainer is required. Possession of or eligible for the Massachusetts licensure as an Athletic Trainer through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professions required. NATA certification and maintenance of certification by NATA is required. CPR, AED, & First Aid Certification (Instructor Certification Preferred). Prior experience within a college or university setting is preferred. A valid driver's license is required. Experience collaborating with strength and conditioning coaches for exercise prescription and rehabilitation needs is preferred.
