Duties and Responsibilities
Athletic Health Care
Promote healthy lifestyle behaviors with effective education and communication to enhance wellness and minimize the risk of injury to student-athletes
Design and implement injury prevention programming for individuals and teams
Monitor student-athlete physical, social, intellectual, emotional, mental and spiritual wellness
Conduct examinations and assessments of injuries and illnesses to form diagnoses
Reassess injury/illnesses over time and modify diagnoses and interventions as necessary
Determine when referral to other healthcare professionals is necessary and coordinate care as necessary
Respond to unpredictable emergency situations and implement emergency action plans as needed, including immediate care, alerting emergency personnel, utilizing equipment, appropriate transportation methods and communication
Prepare for medical emergencies involving student-athletes with conditions such as asthma, sickle cell trait, cardiac disease, diabetes, and more
Monitor environmental conditions that may affect student-athlete health and safety, such as heat, cold and lightning
Plan and progress student-athletes through treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning programs post-injury
Provide athletic health care services for various on-campus athletic events, including practices and competitions, including nights and weekends
Travel occasionally with athletic teams for off-campus competitions
Adhere to Illinois Athletic Trainers Practice Act and BOC Standards of Professional Practice
Maintain regular communication with Medical Director and Team Physician regarding student-athlete care
Follow an evidenced-based model in all aspects of athletic health care whenever possible
Engage in ongoing professional education to ensure the care provided adheres to best practices
Administrative Duties
Document injury/illness reports, clinical findings and diagnoses and all interventions performed and/or recommended
Assess and review student-athlete’s medical clearance prior to participation, including verification of medical insurance coverage
Assist in coordination of insurance claims for athletic injuries and illnesses
Maintain regular communication with athletics coaching staff regarding student-athlete injuries and illnesses
Communicate effectively with Health and Counseling Services regarding student-athlete health status when necessary
Assist in assessment and management of inventory and supplies for athletic health care
Respond to other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, reports, creating policies and special projects
Attend weekly meetings with athletic training staff and athletic training faculty
Preceptor for Athletic Training Students
Serve as preceptor for North Park athletic training students, including supervision, evaluation and mentoring
Develop positive relationships with North Park athletic training students
Engage in annual preceptor training with Athletic Training Program faculty
Communicate with Athletic Training Program faculty regarding athletic training students’ experiences and conduct as necessary
