Position Overview
The athletic trainer is responsible for providing quality healthcare as an integral member of a team-based approach The athletic trainer is expected to assist the head athletic trainer in the day-to-day operations of the athletic training facility, including but not limited to the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses for the student-athletes participating as a member of an intercollegiate program. This full-time position reports directly to the head athletic trainer and will work in accordance with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Code of Ethics, Board of Certification Standards of Professional Practice, NCAA Division I, Northeast Conference (NEC), Hockey East Association, any additional athletic conference affiliation as well as Merrimack College rules, regulations and policies.
Responsibilities include:
Work in a team-based environment primarily with designated teams and student-athletes to provide onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses including: clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, and health and well-being support to student-athletes. Assist with the care of all student-athletes as needed and directed by the head athletic trainer.
Assess risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation and coaching, self-care implementation and overall wellness promotion.
Think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
Maintain written/electronic documentation of all athletic injuries/conditions, treatment, rehabilitation and progress notes, including physician clinic notes, physician referrals, and insurance claims.
Communicate with physicians, coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, and other healthcare providers regarding student-athlete injuries and overall health.
Work cooperatively and communicate with the strength and conditioning staff regarding injuries and rehabilitation, treatment plans, weight room limitations/modifications and programming.
Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education and prevention strategies.
Assist head athletic trainer with administrative responsibilities. Ability to perform responsibilities as directed.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and professionalism to the students involved with the daily operations of the athletic training room including but not limited to graduate teaching fellows, work study interns, and athletic training students.
Opportunities to teach skills and competencies to students in the graduate Athletic Training Education Program and serve as a clinical preceptor as directed by the head athletic trainer and clinical coordinator.
Foster and maintain a culture that demonstrates commitment to the NATA Code of Ethics, BOC Standards of Professional Practice, and Massachusetts Board of Allied Health.

Represent Merrimack Athletics with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
Fulfill other specific areas of responsibility related to the athletic healthcare as directed by the head athletic trainer and medical director.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree
Experience at the collegiate level, preferred.
Ability to work with a variety of athletes, including contact/collision sports such as football, ice hockey, and lacrosse, preferred.
Additional credentials, certifications, and areas of clinical expertise, preferred.
Previous experience working with athletic training students, especially as a clinical preceptor, preferred.
License Requirements:
BOC Certified Athletic Trainer
Massachusetts State License or eligible upon hire
CPR/AED Certification
