The Athletics Academic Advisor reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services and is responsible for providing comprehensive academic support services to student-athletes. These services will include but are not limited to: provide intense monitoring and academic support for at-risk student-athletes, assist with student-athlete-specific registration issues, coordinating faculty academic progress reports, and assist in the academic advising load of undeclared student-athletes. The Athletics Academic Advisor will interpret, analyze and monitor the academic progress of student-athletes; assess student-athletes overall academic performance and its impact on progress toward graduation and NCAA eligibility; maintain knowledge of all NCAA and University rules concerning academic standing and eligibility requirements. The Athletics Academic Advisor must have a commitment to the philosophy of providing a compliance and academic program that emphasizes integrity and the educational welfare of its student-athletes and strives for excellence within the University’s mission.Compliance with NCAA rules is of the utmost importance at Northern Kentucky University. As a member of the athletics department staff, it is expected that the Athletics Academic Advisor will have a full understanding of the NCAA rules that pertain to the position. It is also expected that the Athletics Academic Advisor will comply with all NCAA rules and if he/she becomes aware, or have reasonable cause to believe, that a violation of a rule has occurred he/she will immediately report it to the Director of Athletics or his/her designee.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:1. Assist in the implementation and coordination of all aspects of the academic support program for the intercollegiate athletic program. Work in support of the student-athlete academic support services2. Coordinate academic advising for undeclared student-athletes, referrals to appropriate resources, and study tables.3. Counsel and advise student-athletes regarding coursework, coping strategies, social environment, and graduation.4. Develop and implement the systematic application of learning interventions and study strategies in the areas of time management, learning style, critical reading, note taking, test taking, etc. for individual student-athletes as needed.5. Monitor and supervise the academic progress of assigned student-athletes through one-on-onemeetings, coordination of support services, and academic evaluations to professors.6. Coordinate and prescribe support systems and services for student-athletes (i.e., tutoring, learning disabilities, counseling, academic support courses, etc.)7. Provide timely and accurate reports on the academic status of assigned student-athletes/sports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, coaches, and selected administrators.8. Act as a liaison to the academic programs, including but not limited to, Advising Centers/Campus Advisors, Learning Plus Office, New Student Orientation, and Office of Registrar.9. Oversee and maintain up-to-date student files by tracking course requirements for academic progress towards general studies completion, graduation, and NCAA eligibility requirements for all student-athletes using SAP, CA, and other tools/resources.10. Assist with student-athlete development initiatives, including but not limited to: freshman transition to college, mental health, professional development, student-athlete advisory committee and Title IX programming.11. Develop academic information each semester regarding important dates and programs through an academic calendar for the student-athletes and the athletics staff.12. Oversee the priority registration process for all assigned student-athletes each semester including the review of all course schedules and communications with the Office of the Registrar.13. Monitor and approve drop-add and change of degree activity for all assigned student-athletes.14. Assist with the collection, validation and submission of data required for the NCAA APR and GSR academic reports as directed by the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services.15. Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families during campus recruiting visits to discuss academic programs and support.
Minimum qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred- 1 to 3 years of advising experience- Experience working with students in a college setting and a demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students.- Advanced technology skills and experience with the ability to quickly learn technical advising tools including SAP, and EAB.- Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations- Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.- Ability to establish excellent rapport with students, parents and families, colleagues, and the campus community- Evidence of a commitment to diversity and serving the needs of a diverse population.The review of applicants will begin immediately.
