Job Summary
The Athletics Academic Specialist, under general supervision, monitors the academic progress of student athletes. Develops and maintains tutorial and study hall programs for student athletes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adheres to and monitors National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Conference rules and regulations. Reports violations of NCAA rules and regulations to the proper officials.
Stays abreast of modern trends, techniques, and strategies by attending and taking part in clinics, workshops, and continued training of NCAA rules and regulations.
Maintains updated information on each student athlete’s academic programs.
Provides ongoing evaluation of prospective student athletes’ academic eligibility and informs coaches of the academic statuses of student athletes.
Assists coaches on academic matters relative to student athletes. Assist with reports and surveys related to academics.
Monitor academic progress rate and graduation rate of student athletes.

Additional Responsibilities
Advises current and prospective student athletes concerning their academic requirements. Provides mentoring for students.
Works with stakeholders and oversees academic progress per University, Conference, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules. Ensure compliance with NCAA, Lone Star Conference, and TAMIU Athletics core values.
Assists with the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program.
Acts as liaison coordinating with the Office of Student Success and ACE Academic Support to implement tutoring and learning skills, particularly for at-risk athletes.
Monitor, track, and report all student-athletes and other assigned students’ academic progress towards a degree.
Provide Early Alert assistance and accurately assess student-athletes and other assigned students’ eligibility and progress.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education – Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
Experience – Two years of related experience in academic advising/counseling students.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master’s in applicable field such as Sports Science or sports-related field.
Experience in working with student-athletes in terms of knowledge of NCAA compliance and eligibility criteria.
Experience working with at-risk students.
Experience in academic support services of students.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Word processing and spreadsheet applications.
NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.
Ability to:
Multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
Knowledge of:
Teaching and academic coaching.
Academic support programs.
Ability to:
Consolidate and interpret data for the purpose of assessing targeted interventions to assist student-athletes and non-student-athletes toward graduation.
Employ institutional software in academic advising.
Work cohesively with academic support services in ensuring student-athletes and non-student-athletes in regulating their progress toward graduation.

Supervision of Others
This position generally does not supervise employees.
Other Requirements
Position requires on campus, face-to-face, interactions.
Position requires maintaining a regular schedule schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
Work flexible hours as needed during registration or athlete-related events.
Salary: $19.06/hourly
