Ability to develop and nurture relationships with targeted media with a creative and proactive ability to encourage positive stories and features on the department and its teams, players, and events while reinforcing the university’s overall message
Ability to develop channels nationally, regionally, and locally for disseminating news and proactively pitching team and department initiatives with print, television, radio, and internet media
1-2 years of sports information experience preferred.
Position Overview
| Primary Purpose of Position |
The primary purpose of the assistant sports communications position for North Carolina A&T Athletics presents many elements, including someone with superb public relations instincts and outstanding writing skills.
The proper candidate can work as a liaison between the sports teams N.C. A&T sports teams, the media, and the public. In addition, an effective sports communications assistant must produce a clean and concise copy when writing press releases, news releases, game recaps, feature stories, publications, and other forms of literature, such as game notes.
N.C. A&T is also looking for someone familiar with Adobe Suites, graphics, video editing, and other visual pieces to share information online, on social media, and on other digital channels.
Finally, we are looking for someone who fully understands that there are no “typical days.” A morning may include answering emails and writing game notes before the afternoon is spent rummaging through archives and designing a graphic. At the same time, the evening sees you in a press box providing statistics and a game recap.

I. Specifics
a. Content Management Systems (CMS) North Carolina A&T uses Sidearm Sports to house the athletics website – ncataggies.com.
II. Statistical Data Entry
a. North Carolina A&T athletics uses Stat Crew to provide in-game statistical data for baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis. Must have a history of working with Stat Crew or a superior knowledge of how to score baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis.
b. The department compiles in-game statistical data for football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball using Genius Sports’ NCAA Live Stats program. It is a new program; therefore, it is optional to know the program entirely, but must understand its basic functions. Must also know how football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball are scored.
III. Adobe Creative Suites
a. A&T’s athletics communication department uses Adobe Suites for many functions, including design and layout, graphics, photo editing, and video editing.
IV. Miscellaneous
a. North Carolina A&T athletics will purchase new software as it becomes available to enhance what we do in athletics. For example, we currently use INFLCR, STATS Perform, Sports Systems, and Boxout. These are programs we have purchased within the last two years. A viable candidate must have experience in adapting to the ever-changing technology dynamic. |

Must be able to communicate orally effectively with the constituents of athletics, including administrators, coaches, and his or her supervisor. Must be able to communicate orally effectively with the constituents of athletics, including administrators, coaches, and his or her supervisor. Have a superior skill set in communicating all happenings within various varsity programs for the use of strategy in coverage and to ensure proper policy and protocols are followed. Able to listen to instructions intently and execute duties as assigned by the supervisor. Must have outstanding people and communications skills to convey ideas and visions for the communications department.
Written Communication
Must have excellent writing skills, superior knowledge of grammar usage, adept at editing one’s work, and a running knowledge of the Associated Press Style of writing. Have excellent storytelling skills for writing features, interesting game recaps, press releases, and colorful and interesting scripts for social media. Able to turn around copy promptly, professionally and accurately, ensuring the copy is free from typos, grammar mistakes and factual errors as frequently as possible. Attention to detail is a requirement. |
