Job Description

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is seeking an Athletics Therapist to provide psychological services to assist student-athletes in attaining mental health and well-being. These services may include individual psychotherapy, individual and team sport performance, coordination of clinical referrals for care, crisis intervention and management, and educational and outreach programming. All aspects of student-athlete identity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, should be attended to and respected when providing mental health care.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Manage and provide specialized counseling and sport psychology services specifically for the UI Department of Athletics student-athlete population.
  • Conduct intake, risk assessment and triage; develop and implement evidence-based therapy management plans assess and respond to crisis intervention; actively monitor risk factors; create a safe and inclusive environment; provide referrals as needed; develop, write, and maintain electronic records of services delivered.
  • Provide complex consultations to individual athletic trainers, academic coordinators, coaches, and administrators regarding mental health crisis, student-athletes of concern, challenging situations, general mental health issues and strategies for implementing performance psychology techniques.
  • Deliver sport performance services to student-athletes and teams through mental skills training, team building exercises, coach/staff consultation, etc.
  • Build relationships with coaches, staff, and teams to create strong connections between sport psychology resources and student-athletes/teams as well as to learn about the unique cultures and nuances of each sport.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and competency in working with the full range of diverse groups.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team(s) within the athletic department in the management of student-athletes with significant mental health issues, disordered eating, etc.; assist with case management and coordination of mental health care for clinical referrals to outside resources for mental health and AOD services for student-athletes; provide referrals to students as needed and desired; monitor patients who are taking psychotropic medications and coordinate care with prescribing provider.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of outreach programming of various health and well-being topics geared towards student-athletes and, when requested, coaches and staff.
  • Promote coordination of care and assure quality in services and program delivery.
  • Establish and disseminate referral, scheduling, and documentation procedures to provide clinical services. Coordinate referral sources.
  • Develop relationships with other Athletic Department Units and University Departments to enhance quality of UI student-athletes’ educational experiences.
  • Adhere to best practices, ethical guidelines, and federal and state statutes applicable to delivery of psychological services.
