Job Summary

The boathouse manager / boatman maintains responsibility for the rowing center with respect to work orders and communicating with facilities the needs of the rowing programs. They are also responsible for the maintenance of all rowing equipment including on land machines, docks, coaches launches, and rowing shells. The role includes problem solving, including fixing of rowing shells, motor maintenance and anything else that needs to be solved that directly impacts the performance of practice and racing. The role also maintains complete oversight with respect to the racing fleet including maintenance and some transportation of shells to the regattas.: The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for providing administrative support to the department. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing schedules and meetings, answering phones, responding to emails, identifying, and prioritizing items for action, planning and executing office administration. The Administrative Assistant works with a diverse group of external callers and visitors as well as internal contacts at all levels within the University.

• Oversees the daily scheduling on duties of the work studies during the school year 
• Educates the work studies on the proper way to do maintenance and other boathouse items. 
• Evaluates performance and provides timely feedback.

 

Duties/Responsibilities

• Equipment Maintenance: Ensuring all indoor equipment is up to date and properly functioning. Keep all C2 equipment software updated. Ensure all motorboats are functioning properly. If equipment is damaged or not working, fix the equipment, or hire professionals. Create servicing schedules and coordinate with contractors to adhere to that schedule. 
• Equipment Rigging: In conjunction with head coach responsible to help with rigging of all boats. 
• Equipment Cleanliness: Ensuring all equipment is clean and ready to use. Create cleaning schedule for oars and boats, and ensure athletes are properly disinfecting oar handles between rows. 
• Trailer Driving: Drive the trailer to races and training locations throughout the school year.
• Trailer Loading: Create plan for where all boats, oars and other equipment will be loaded onto the trailer. Communicate plan to coxswains and assistant coaches so the trailer can be loaded quickly and efficiently. 
• Regatta Support: Wash all boats and oars. Oversee all rigging (done by the athletes), double check every nut, heel tie, foot stretcher and steering. 
• At practice: Be ready on land for any issue that may arise during practice and be ready to fix equipment or problem solve so that practice is minimally affected. 
• Boathouse Docks: Maintain a safe useable environment for the athlete. Weekly checks to ensure they are in proper working order. 
• Boathouse organization: Design a system for boathouse so that the boathouse is streamlined and efficient for student managers, athletes and coaches. Creating thoughtful systems for quick access to boats, tools, buoys, travel boxes, gym equipment, spare riggers, oars, lights, chargers, megaphones, launch keys, towel bins and washing equipment. Continuing to improve current logistics. 
• Boathouse Operations: Work with facilities to submit work orders, and schedule any boathouse issues as they arise. Maintain the interworkings of the facility and address any interior needs right away or reach out to hire a specialist to complete. 

Required Skills/Abilities

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
• Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate. 
• Ability to repair a racing shell 
• Some small boat/engine repair experience. 
• The ability to identify the problem and solve it

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

• Bachelor degree preferred 
• Boat maintenance and engine maintenance preferred 
• Past experience working with resins and carbon fiber 
• Welding experience preferred 
• At least one year of related experience as a boatman or rowing coach

Physical Requirements 

• Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds 
• Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach. 
• Must be able to drive a automobile 
• Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
