The Chief Financial Officer “CFO” serves as a key executive partner in defining and executing the strategic vision of Army West Point Athletic Association “AWPAA”. The CFO provides fiscal leadership to ensure the financial sustainability, transparency, and operational excellence of a $54 million nonprofit enterprise. This executive will craft a long-term financial strategy aligned with AWPAA’s mission to develop leaders of character through athletic excellence, while implementing effective process improvements that enhance efficiency, accountability, and strategic decision-making across all departments.

The role ensures financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, and effective stewardship of institutional, donor, and grant-funded resources. The CFO influences strategic planning and operational decisions across all departments through financial analysis, policy development, and leadership of the business office.

The CFO exercises a high level of independent judgment in developing financial strategies, managing budgets, and advising the Athletic Director and Board on fiscal matters. While operating within established regulations, nonprofit accounting standards, and institutional policies, the role makes key decisions regarding financial planning, resource allocation, and risk management. The position also evaluates financial challenges and recommends solutions that support organizational priorities and long-term sustainability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

35% Strategic Financial Leadership

• Develop and execute a multi-year financial plan aligned with AWPAA’s mission and institutional priorities.
• Advise the Athletic Director and Board on strategic initiatives, long-term planning, and risk management. Provide financial analytics and scenario modeling to guide executive decisions.

20% Budgeting & Financial Management 

• Oversee AWPAA’s $54M operating and capital budgets, ensuring fiscal discipline and strategic alignment.
• Lead forecasting, reporting, and analysis to inform decisions across all athletic programs.

15% Internal Controls & Compliance 

• Ensure integrity of financial data, compliance with GAAP, NCAA, and Department of Defense standards.
• Maintain audit readiness and oversee ethical and transparent fiscal practices.

15% Sponsored Projects & Endowment Stewardship 

• Manage donor funds, endowments, and grants in alignment with donor intent and institutional policies.
• Collaborate with Development and Alumni Relations to ensure stewardship and fiscal integrity.

15% Operational Leadership

• Lead and mentor finance staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Implement process innovations to enhance financial reporting and decision-making.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Direct oversight over business office staff.

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

Perform duties in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time.
• Occasionally moves boxes weighing up to up to 30 lbs. 
• The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. 
• Constantly operates a computer, printer, and phone. 
• The person in this position frequently communicates with team members, United States Military Academy (“USMA”) staff and vendors. 
• Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
• Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive financial management experience, with 5+ years in executive leadership roles.
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance or related field.
• Proven success as a senior financial leader or CFO in a nonprofit, university, or athletic organization of comparable scale.
• Demonstrated ability to design and execute long-range financial strategies aligned with mission-driven goals.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary finance teams with a focus on professional development.
• Expertise in nonprofit and higher education finance, including fund accounting, endowment management, and grant compliance.
• Strong command of budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling for complex organizations.
• Ability to collaborate with the executive team and board members on developing and realizing a strategic vision.
• Excellent communication and data visualization skills (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
• Proficiency in enterprise financial systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
• CPA or CMA certification.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

• Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
• Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Pay Range

$150,000 to $160,000

This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position. AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.

This position will be housed within the AWPAA, which is a non-profit corporation organized to manage and support the 30 intercollegiate athletic programs at the Academy. The AWPAA mission is to recruit, educate, train and inspire leaders of character who are committed to the Army an extraordinary NCAA Division I athletic experience.
