This position fulfills the critical need of ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable compliances with institutional policies and regulations related to the athletic eligibility of University of Maryland (
UMD
) athletes, and with the athletic certification and reporting processes to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (
NCAA
) and the Big Ten Conference.
The Coordinator of Athletic Certifications and Compliances oversees the area of Athletic Certifications & Compliances (
ACC
) in the Office of the University Registrar (
OUR
) and reports to an Associate Registrar. The incumbent monitors their academic eligibility and certifies student-athletes, collaborates with the
UMD
Athletics Departments and other offices as appropriate regarding compliances, validates requirements, and prepares and submits reports regarding student-athletes’ academic progress and eligibility to participate in training and athletic competitions. This position is responsible for completing the annual Academic Progress (
APR
) and Graduation Success Rate (
GSR
) reports for
NCAA
athletic eligibility. In addition to sports-participation eligibility and reporting, the duties performed by this position have a major impact on student eligibility for athletic scholarships and associated downstream effects on the university’s brand and donor support.
This position must remain current on all
NCAA
, Big Ten, and university standards, policies, and procedures related to the athletic eligibility of students to participate in intercollegiate sports; and, be knowledgeable of, and utilize, complex information technology operations to support students’ records and transactions. The incumbent needs to be knowledgeable of a wide array of subject matters within
OUR
and be able to understand, interpret, and explain policy determinations. This position is responsible for: maintaining and updating the university’s Student Information System (
SIS
) related to incoming and continuing student-athletes, processing evaluations of student-athletes transferring to the institution, and ensuring accuracy of annual reporting to the
NCAA
. The incumbent must monitor, interpret, apply, and certify student-athletes’ compliance with
NCAA
, Big Ten, and university rules and regulation.
The position is highly accountable for tasks that require a high degree of decision-making and professional judgment in assuring compliance with these policies. The incumbent needs to be cognizant that decisions regarding student athlete eligibility have serious implications for individual student-athletes, each athletic team, and the university’s athletics program as a whole.

Experience:
Minimum of four years of office experience (preferably in higher education) working with complex data and/or information technology environments that support records (preferably student records) and services in a team environment involving customer service.
Experience interpreting and processing policies and regulations. Knowledge of college or university Office of the Registrar operations preferred.
Project management experience a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to perform business and systems requirements analyses, and to extract information from databases to create reports, and data analytics and visualization.
Competency in providing training to individuals and groups.

High level of organizational skills, tact, diplomacy, excellent judgment, and well-developed written and oral communication skills.

Technical aptitude, ability to understand data and work intelligently with
UMD
systems and general data tools.
Familiarity with working with people of diverse backgrounds is highly desirable together with highly developed customer relations skills.
Ability to interpret rules and regulations and required procedures associated with compliance required. This position interprets
NCAA
, Big Ten, and university rules and regulations, and must explain them clearly and consistently to a variety of clients and campus partners.
A high level of integrity with evaluating high educational standards; and, have a solid commitment to academic integrity, the welfare of student-athletes, and full compliance with
NCAA
, Big Ten and Institutional rules and regulations. Knowledge of
NCAA
and Big Ten rules, and a working knowledge of
NCAA
eligibility and Office of the Registrar operations are desirable.
This position requires significant effort to respond in a dynamic, public-facing, environment which involves complex systems and client services environments. The individual must be flexible and be able to multitask while maintaining a positive and proactive spirit of service and accountability.
This position is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of critical compliance information, therefore concentration and clarity are required at all times. However, this position is also one where constant interruptions will occur. As a result, the person in this position must be able to not only concentrate on the details, but also change direction to discuss problems/issues upon demand.
This person must be able to tolerate long periods of accessing information via computer and on paper, perform detailed analyses, and have a patient appreciation for the details involved in editing, reading, making necessary corrections and additions.
Preferences:
Familiarity with working with people of diverse backgrounds is highly desirable together with highly developed customer relations skills.
Salary Range: $70,000 – $75,000.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
