POSITION SUMMARY

The Mental Health Counselor for Athletics has the primary responsibility to provide direct mental health counseling services (diagnostic, assessment, crisis intervention and brief psychotherapy) to all Le Moyne College student-athletes. Will coordinate and provide outreach and prevention programming to student-athletes, staff, coaches and administrators in the Athletic Department and Le Moyne student body as assigned by the Director of the Wellness Center with focus on managing mental health conditions and related issues typically experienced by student-athletes engaged in competitive intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level. This position will serve as the intermediary between the Wellness Center and Athletics Department to facilitate the goal of making mental health and wellbeing services accessible for all student athletes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Job duties specific to this position:

• Provides individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy to a broad range of student athletes from undergraduate, graduate, and non-traditional student populations.
• Provides emergency services to student athletes in crisis and/or consultation with other college personnel
• Provides crisis intervention to student athletes experiencing emotional duress.
• Conduct and manage required NCAA pre-participation mental health screeningsand make recommendations for follow-up.
• Generate and Implement treatment plans from evidenced-based approaches.
• Provides case management, collaboration with key personnel, and continuity of care, including referrals to community providers
• Keep Athletics Department staff, coaches and administrators apprised of the NCAA mental health best practices which serve the needs of student-athletes and the consultative/psycho-educational needs of the athletic department team.
• Create and facilitate presentations and programming to groups of students, faculty, staff, and parents, including and especially athletic teams, on topics and educational programs related to mental health and wellness, which directly or indirectly impact performance.
• Work collaboratively with a diverse university community of students, faculty, administrators and families.
• Serve as liaison between Le Moyne College Wellness Center for Health and Counseling and the Le Moyne Athletics Department.
• Participates in multidisciplinary and administrative team meetings
• Document, report and maintain confidential records and information in compliance with applicable laws and professional ethical standards.
• Performs administrative duties as assigned
• Possess a commitment and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of their counseling profession and as set by Le Moyne College and the NCAA
• Develops and initiates outreach, prevention and wellness programming for a diverse range of student concerns and issues for all Le Moyne students
• Develops and initiates education and training programs for faculty, staff, and administrators as partners in the well-being of all Le Moyne students.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters’ degree in Mental Health or Social Work or Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or Counselor Education from a CACREP or APA accredited program, or closely related field.
• Current license (or license eligible within 6 months) to practice mental health in New York State
• Minimum 1-3 years of experience providing direct mental health services to student athletes
• Experience providing outreach and consultation with college student-athletes within an NCAA Division 1 athletics department preferred.
• Experience providing crisis intervention services
• Experience in providing brief, solution focused psychotherapy
• Experience in providing educational programming to large groups
• Clinical experience in a college counseling center setting is strongly preferred
• A holistic, wellness philosophy and approach is preferred.
