Job Description
The coach will provide daily instruction to student-athletes to increase their knowledge and understanding of the sport. Provide strategic direction, leadership, and motivation to prepare student-athletes for intercollegiate competition. Plan, organize and conduct practice sessions. Educate and enforce safety rules and regulations. Plan and direct physical conditioning programs that will enable athletes to achieve maximum performance. Educate individuals or groups in rules, strategies, techniques, and principles relevant to their particular sport. Evaluate athletes' skill level and review performance records to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of athletics. Keep abreast of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to their sport. Ensure compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations for their respective sport program during games. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work requirements indicate.
Responsibilities:
70% COACHING/ SUPERVISION OF STUDENT ATHLETES
Develop a dance team program to include choreography, skill building, instruction on technique; Instructs student athletes on physical health, team concepts and safety. Instructs student athletes in the rules and fundamentals of their sport. Effectively communicate with team, Band Director, and Athletics staffs. Continually make the best efforts to engage the crowd and foster a positive, energetic atmosphere at home events; Work with the Graduate Assistant to supervise and delegate responsibilities.
15% PLANNING AND SCHEDULING
Plan and coordinate all try-outs for Dance team: including recruitment, advertising, physical clearance and scheduling of space; Schedule and attend try-outs and practices: ensure that space is secured on campus through Athletics; Maintain a calendar of practices and events including but not limited to the team’s presence and support at all Football, Men’s and Women’s home basketball games and applicable tournaments; Prepare the team for on-campus and school-related engagements including but not limited to Homecoming, Spirit Performances, Pep Rallies, and requested events;
10% ADMINISTRATION
Uphold the Student Code of Conduct; Maintain knowledge of, and uphold NCAA, NDA, and conference rules and regulations such as safety, certification; Work to ensure policies of the College are upheld, specific examples include anti-hazing policies (zero tolerance), medical clearance requirements (no student is to practice until cleared by Health Services after an updated physical is on file), and appropriate waiver forms; Maintain and update rosters and emergency contact information of all team members; Travel to some away games and may be required to drive campus van to venues. Texas A & M System van certification course will be required; Manage current supply inventory and work with Student Development to order new supplies. This includes warm-ups, uniforms, and poms through the appropriate purchasing guidelines; Participates in fund-raising and community relations; Exhibit appropriate budget management skills
5% OTHER DUTIES
Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Department, related to the Dance Coach position (i.e., competitions, tournaments); Safety is the responsibility of every employee; therefore all employees will be trained to perform work safely. Should you feel inadequately trained to perform a certain procedure, immediately discuss the problem with your supervisor. You will be evaluated in the area of safety practices during the annual evaluation. Working safely, following all appropriate rules and regulations for safety and the environment are a job requirement and an expectation for employment with Tarleton State University.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and work experience that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts of collegiate sports programs. Coaching experience with leading planning, including program development and innovation, program prioritization, and assessment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated expertise in the sport to achieve results. Commitment to developing a successful program with a high level of integrity. Must be detail-oriented and organized in the administration of financial matters, travel plans, schedule development and oversight of the sport program.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong background in dance, choreography, technique, and stunting.
Physical Demands Required
Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required. Commensurate with experience
Salary is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
