Chicago State University is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and innovative Defensive Coordinator to lead the development and execution of its defensive football strategy. As a key member of the inaugural FCS Division I Coaching staff, the Defensive Coordinator will play a central role in building a championship-caliber program from the ground up. This position will oversee all aspects of the defense, including scheme, personnel development, game planning, and recruiting, while promoting the values and mission of CSU Athletics.
Defensive Strategy & Game Planning:
Player Development & Leadership:
Monitor academic progress and personal development of defensive student-athletes in coordination with academic services.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator to identify and recruit top-tier defensive talent.
Evaluate prospective student-athletes through film, in-person evaluations, and networking with high school/junior college coaches.
Contribute to official/unofficial visit planning and execution.
Maintain a recruiting footprint with a strong presence in the Midwest, especially in Illinois and surrounding regions.
Establish a culture of accountability, discipline, toughness, and excellence on the defensive side of the ball.
Assist with program development, including team culture, community engagement, and alumni relations.
Help build a competitive and compliant Division I football environment in accordance with NCAA, conference, and university rules.
Other duties as assigned
Background in multiple defensive schemes (e.g., 3-4, 4-2-5, 4-3) and situational packages
